Montrose 1 v Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale 2 (aet)
Montrose crashed out of the Scottish Cup at the hands of East of Scotland League side Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale, suffering an extra time defeat in the second round replay.
The East of Scotland League champions took the fight to their League 2 opponents and opened the scoring in the 15th minute when SCOTT GORMLEY controlled the ball in the box and curled a left foot shot over Montrose goalkeeper Ross Salmon into the top corner.
Montrose equalised in the 31st minute when TERRY MASSON collected the ball in the middle of the pitch 30 yards out then lashed a low shot across goal and into the bottom corner.
With neither side able to break the deadlock during the remaining hour of play, the match moved into extra time.
The visitors scored the only goal of the added period, substitute WILLIS HARE powering into the Montrose box before hitting a low shot that took a deflection and bounced over Salmon and into the net.
It was no more than Lothian Thistle deserved, having looked the better side for long periods during the match.
Both sides attempted to open the scoring early on with shots from the edge of the box, Masson shooting at visiting goalkeeper Kevin Swain, Thistle’s Scott Taylor MacKenzie firing wide and John Kerr blasting over.
Having fallen a goal behind, Montrose came close to equalising through Scott Johnston, but his half volley from 25 yards out flew wide of the target.
With both sides seeking a winner in the second half, Richie Wilkes came close in the 50th minute when he headed wide from Liam O’Donnell’s free kick, while Gray Fraser did the same at the opposite end of the park when he connected with Graham Webster’s cross to the near post.
Fraser looked the Montrose player most likely to find a winner in normal time, shooting wide from a Johnston pass in the 65th minute and having a low shot blocked in the final seconds. Thistle could also have snatched a late winner, Dean Cummings having a low shot blocked by Salmon in stoppage time.
The visitors looked the more likely side to win in extra time, Hare coming close with a shot inside the box just a minute before he put Thistle ahead.
Liam O’Donnell should have put the result beyond doubt in the 103rd minute, but sent a weak header wide of the post when unmarked at the penalty spot.
Gary Fraser almost struck lucky in the 107th minute when his cross-cum-shot from wide on the left was tipped over the crossbar by Swain.
Substitute Adrian Mallagaray should have done better with Montrose’s last throw of the dice in the final minute of extra time, but he scooped his shot over both the goalkeeper and the crossbar.
