Cove Rangers 3 Montrose 0

A Betfred League Cup section which got underway with two good performances for Montrose Football Club against Premiership Ross County and Championship Raith Rovers ended in utter disappointment for the team as they crashed to a heavy defeat to Highland League Champions Cove Rangers.

The defeat meant that Montrose finished the group that also included League One Alloa Athletic at the bottom after four straight defeats. Montrose can have little complaint about this result after a poor performance and the hosts were deserved winners on the night.

Montrose made there changes to the side which lost to Alloa Athletic with Jordan Millar, Gregor Anderson making his debut after signing from Tayport in the summer and Chris Templeman returning from suspension replacing Allan Fleming and the injured pair of Chris Hegarty and Michael Bolochoweckyj.

The home side managed by former Montrose legend John Sheran also included a few players with Montrose connections Stuart McKenzie, Darryn Kelly and John McCafferty with former youth players Blair Yule and Daniel Park also listed. There was also a place in central defence for ex Roselea player Eric Watson.

Cove Rangers got only the second meeting between the sides out with friendlies underway at Station Park.

Montrose carved out a great opening in the third minute when Kieran McWalter played a one two with Webster before taking the return pass and curling the ball just past the far post from the edge of the area.

The home side had their first opening in the seventh minute when Stuart Walker headed a corner kick from Connor Scully just wide.

Cove Rangers opened the scoring in the 14th minute. From another Scully corner kick the ball fell to STUART WALKER at the far post. His first header was blocked but the ball came back to him and he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later Montrose had a chance to equalise a long throw in from Pascazio found Webster he in turn feed Fraser whose close range effort was blocked. The ball then fell to Watson on the edge of the area but he could only blast the ball well over the crossbar.

Eric Watson then pushed over Templeman on the edge of the area. Giving Montrose a free kick in a great position unfortunately Webster could only drive his free kick against the wall.

In the 26th minute Montrose again went close to an equaliser when a Templeman header from a Masson corner kick was headed off the line by a Cove Rangers defender.

In a lighting break Montrose carved open the home defence. Fraser played the ball wide to Masson who slipped a great ball through to McWalter but again he could only curl wide of the far post.

McWalter then crossed for Gary Fraser who saw his shot blocked for another fruitless corner kick.

With five minutes of the half remaining Cove Rangers were forced into a change taking injured ex Montrose player Darryn Kelly and replacing him with Harry Milne.

Montrose almost went two goals behind with three minutes of the half remaining. Mitch Megginson was clean through on goal with only Jordan Millar to beat but the Montrose keeper pulled off a wonderful save to keep the score at one.

The Gable Endies though that they had drawn level in the 48th minute of the match. Gary Fraser’s volley was heading for the bottom corner only for Stuart McKenzie to make a wonderful save and tip the ball around the post.

In the 54th minute Scully cut the ball back for Blair Yule but he curled his effort over the crossbar.

Cove Rangers didn’t have long to wait for a killer second goal and it came in the 57th minute when MITCH MEGGISON had three attempts to get the ball in the net and he succeeded after the Montrose defence failed to clear the ball despite numerous attempts. The home side then brought on Daniel Park for Buchan.

Six minutes later it was almost three went Jordan Millar was forced to tip over a net bound header from Jonathan Smith.

Ex Montrose Roselea defender Eric Watson was then totally unmarked as he headed just over the Montrose crossbar as things started to go from bad to worse for the Gable Endies.

In the 63rd minute the injured Gary Fraser was replaced by Ryan Ferguson in attack.

Gregor Anderson marked his Montrose debut with a booking in the 69th minute after a foul on Harry Milne.

Two minutes later Eric Watson of the home side was booked for a foul on Ferguson. Paul Watson swung over the free kick for Montrose only for the home side to clear easily.

With 71 minutes gone Montrose made their second change with Ross Lennie coming on in the middle of the park for Watson.

Harry Milne was the next player to be yellow carded by referee Mike Taylor for a push on Webster.

Cove Rangers added some gloss to the scoreline with a deserved third goal in the 77th minute. Yule went on a lung bursting run from the middle of the park and sprayed a lovely pass to substitute DANIEL PARK who curled a beautiful effort over Millar and into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Manager Hegarty made his final switch with twelve minutes left Adam Harwood coming on at left back in place of Ross Campbell. At the same time the hosts brought on Donaldson for Smith.
