Clyde 2 Montrose 1
It was Chris Templeman who got the new league season underway for Montrose at Broadwood against league title favourites Clyde on Saturday. In the end two well worked goals by the home side denied Montrose victory in what was a difficult fixture, against a side who had invested in some good summer signings including Dylan Easton, Matty Flynn and Peter MacDonald.
Montrose had good chances to take an early lead but failed to take these chances and in the end were unlucky not to take something from the game.
After the Irn Bru Cup victory over East Stirlingshire Montrose made three changes to their line up with Jordan Millar, trialist central defender ex Peterhead captain Callum MacDonald and captain Paul Watson coming in for Allan Fleming, Gregor Anderson and the suspended Terry Masson.

Montrose had a good chance in the fifth minute when a cross from Webster was deflected out for a corner kick. Ferguson and Fraser worked the short corner and when Webster floated over a cross home keeper John Gibson somehow managed to block Paul Watson’s net bound header on the goaline. From Webster’s corner kick Montrose trialist MacDonald saw his header blocked before Watson blasted over the rebound.
The visitors kept up the pressure and Webster then headed wide from a cross from the left from Iain Campbell.
The Gable Endies should have opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. Webster did all the work inside the box before laying the ball on a plate for Templeman he took one touch to wrong foot his marker but with the goal gapping he somehow managed to drag his shot wide.
Jordan Millar kept Montrose in the game with a brilliant 35 yard tip over from an effort from Scott Linton. Dangerman Dylan Easton took the corner kick the ball fell to David Gormley but he put what was a good chance wide.
In the 24th minute it was Clyde who opened the scoring with a great goal. Lennie failed to get in a tackle and DYLAN EASTON was allowed to run on and blast an unstoppable effort past Millar and into the top corner.
Three minutes later Montrose almost grabbed an equaliser. Ferguson found Watson whose cross to Templeman was controlled by the Montrose striker but he turned and could only shoot over the bar.
An Easton run was ended when he was fouled by MacDonald on the edge of the Montrose box with half time approaching. Ex Dundee striker Peter MacDonald took the free kick but Millar pulled off a great save.
Clyde weren’t finished and on the stroke of half time MacDonald got into a great shooting position only for Millar to any deny him with another great stop.
Montrose full back Iain Campbell picked the first booking of the afternoon for a foul on Easton.
Two minutes later Montrose had a let off when offside was given against David Gormley when the Clyde player had clearly received the ball off the back of a Montrose player. Thankfully for Montrose Gormley shot past.
Montrose got back into the match in the 55th minute when they grabbed their first league goal of the season. McWalter got the ball wide to Graham Webster on the touchline and the Montrose winger fired over a great cross to the back post where CHRIS TEMPLEMAN rose at the back post to bullet a header past Gibson.
The home side almost regained the league seconds later when Gormley got on the end of an Easton cross only to head wide of the post.

The home side almost caught out Montrose with a quickly taken free kick. Lennie fouled Gormley giving Clyde a free kick in a dangerous position. In a rehearsed move Easton slipped the ball into the path of Linton racing into the area but Millar once again kept Montrose in the match with a brilliant stop.
Graham Webster became the second Montrose player to be yellow carded this time for obstruction.
With twenty minutes left Montrose made a change sending on Ross Campbell for Ryan Ferguson.
Despite all the good defending Clyde caught out Montrose in the 75th minute when they scored again. Easton was allowed time to run at the Montrose defence and when he played the ball forward MacDonald flicked the ball onto the onrushing MATTY FLYNN and the substitute was allowed time to slot the ball past Millar and into the corner of the net.
Montrose immediately made another switch with Paul Watson being replaced by Gregor Anderson.
Easton of the home side was booked when he held back Ross Campbell.
Millar kept Montrose in the match when he tipped over a header from Peter MacDonald at the back post.
