Montrose Greats - Gary Murray
Gary Murray was a quiet unassumming saw doctor from Blairgowrie who signed for Montrose for his first spell in 1978 from Blairgowrie Juniors.
The centre forward formed an early profitable partnership with Dougie Robb which earned him a club record £60,000 move to Hibernian in late 1980.
After an injury hit spell in the Premier League at Easter Road he returned to Links Park via a spell at Forfar Athletic in the summer of 1986 along with Alan Lyons in a swop deal that took Stevie Lennox to Station Park. He immediately renewed his prolific scoring habit for the Gable Endies.
This included an amazing four goal solo demolition of Cowdenbeath at Central Park (one of his favourite hunting grounds) and his final goal for the club in the promotion winning 3-0 victory over Queen of the South at Dumfries in May 1991. Due to injury Gary retired before Montrose's season in Division one in 1991/92. "Charger" played 179+55 sub league and cup games for the Gable Endies scoring 91 goals.
