Today sees the funeral of John Archbold and all at Montrose Football Club were very saddened to here of the passing of our friend and former Director.
Club Chairman, John Crawford said, “John was very popular, well respected and a true Gable Endie. We were appointed as directors on the same day and had some great times together being part of the club. He will be sadly missed and the thoughts and condolences of everyone associated with Montrose FC are with the family at this very sad time.”
John Archbold was a Montrose Football Club supporter through and through and after taking over as Commercial Manager in 1987, he moved onto the Board of Directors in February 1994.
After leaving the Board 5 years later, John continued his loyalty and enthusiasm for Montrose FC and was a regular on the terracing and in hospitality. He also supported the club through sponsorship and advertising in the match programme, teamlines and the pitch side hoardings
Club Ambassador, David Larter remembers John taking part in training sessions when the squad was a bit short, with John taking great delight scoring past the Legend goalkeeper.
John was a well known local footballer and had been on the books of Dundee United in his youth before playing amateur football in the town. He was known to feature for the MFC Supporters club when they turned out in local tournaments and John also supported local Junior side Montrose Roselea.
John is pictured far right with fellow supporters Bill Bremner, George Mennie, Brian Leiper and George Ferris with the Scottish Second Division trophy in May 1985 at the Queen Street Social Club.
