St Johnstone U17s 2 Montrose U17s 2
The Mighty Mo travelled to Perth for their final competive fixture in 2017. Up against a strong Saints outfit the team were looking to finish a positive year on a high at McDiarmid Park. The game probably couldn't have got off to a worse start with the visitors losing possession straight from their own kick off which resulted in conceding a very early corner. From the resultant corner kick the Gable Endies failed to clear their lines properly and a strike from the edge of the box ended up in the bottom left hand corner of the net to put Saints 1-0 up. From there on the game was very even and the Mo giving as good as they got and then as the half progressed started to take control of the game. It was just reward as the half was coming to a close that after an excellent move Ryan Hunt latched onto a Jackson Dobbie pass and calmly placed the ball past the Super Js keeper to make the score 1-1 at half time.
The second half started in a similar vain with the Gable Endies doing most of the attacking and they scored a well deserved second when a good ball crossed in from the left from Jack Dobbie finally reached Fraser MacLeod who made no mistake and fired home from around 8 yards out. The game was fairly even there after with the Mo coping with any threat the Saints could make however with just under 10 minutes to go conceded a penalty and from the resultant kick the Saints striker levelled at 2-2 and that was how it would end despite the best efforts of the team. So in summary a very good way to finish off the first half of the season with a decent result and the boys more than a bit disappointed not to grab the victory.
The first half of the 2017-18 season has been very positive for the current U17 squad with a number of boys getting the opportunity to be involved with the first team pre-season. Kieran Thomson started 3 competitive games and made 3 substitute appearances and will likely go out on loan soon, Euan Rose has been a regular on the bench covering Allan Fleming during Jordan Millar loan spell at Lochee United, Fraser MacLeod made his competitive debut in the Betfred Cup v Alloa, Ryan Hunt his competitive League debut v Edinburgh City and Rohan Terrell was heavily involved in the pre-season friendlies. Others who also appeared included Scott Glennie, Lewis Stracey and Ross Fraser. The coach's are looking to make further progress in 2018 and that includes continuing the excellent work of our U15s squad who will move up to U16s in February as part of Project Brave.
