MONTROSE suffered a heavy home defeat at the hands of Premier League side Ross County in the second of their Betfred group matches.

THOMAS MIKKELSEN opened the scoring in the 15th minute, heading past Jordan Millar from Ryan Dow’s cross.

CRAIG CURRAN added a second in the 27th minute, driving a penalty kick to Millar’s left after Sean Dillon was adjudged to have fouled Mikkelsen in the box.

Ross County’s third came from MICHAEL GARDYNE, whose shot from Curran’s cross bounced in off Millar.

The Dingwall side took a four-goal lead on the stroke of half time, CURRAN crashing a shot in off the underside of the crossbar after the ball had bounced around the Montrose box from a free kick.

Ross County continued the second half in similar fashion, MIKKELSEN collecting Dow’s pass and firing a shot across Millar and into the far side of the goal.

They completed the rout four minutes later, substitute ALEX SHALK rifling in a low shot.

Montrose’s scoring chances were few and far between. Graham Webster sent a half volley over the crossbar in the 37th minute, and Terry Masson blasted over from a Chris Templeman knockdown seven minutes later.

Kerr Hay looked the most likely Montrose player to score in the second half, setting off on a long run in the 48th minute. He squared the ball to Templeman, whose shot was blocked, and was first to reach the rebound, which he lashed into the side netting.

The final few minutes were marked by Montrose withstanding a late Ross County onslaught, Millar pulling off several dramatic saves to keep the visitors’ tally to six.
