Montrose 2 Alloa Athletic 1
MONTROSE picked up their first win of the season in their final Betfred Cup match.
Kerr HAY scored Montrose’s first goal of the season in the 21st minute after good play by Kieran Thomson. The midfielder carried the ball to the bye line before passing back to KERR HAY, whose thumping finish left Alloa goalkeeper Craig McDowall helpless as it flew into the net.
Montrose captain PAUL WATSON doubled the home side’s lead five minutes into the second half when Iain Campbell’s corner dropped to him six yards out. He lashed his shot into the roof of the net.
Alloa rallied towards the end of the match, and were given a glimmer of hope when IAIN FLANNIGAN smashed a shot past Jordan Millar from the edge of the box after Montrose failed to clear the ball.
Montrose looked more dangerous than in their previous Betfred Cup clashes, Hay denied early on after a powerful dribble down the left.
Millar was also called into action in the first 10 minutes, making a full-length diving save to deny Flannigan.
Alloa had chances to open the scoring before Montrose took the lead, Kris Renton heading wide from a corner and Scott Taggart’s audacious 40-yard shot from wide on the right tipped wide by Millar.
After Montrose’s opener, the home side looked to add to their lead, Connor McLaren having a low shot held. At the other end, Adam Martin’s cross/shot dropped inches wide of the post and Renton had a shot saved.
The last chance of the first half fell to Gary Fraser, the Montrose striker’s low shot from the edge of the box held by McDowall.
Having pushed two goals ahead, Montrose could have been pegged back immediately if Steven Hetherington’s 40-yard shot had been on target.
Matty Wallace had a low shot held in the 52nd minute, and Ross Campbell should have done better when he dragged his half volley wide of the post from inside the box two minutes later.
Campbell tested McDowall again in the 62nd minute, the goalkeeper holding his 20-yard shot.
Garry Fleming failed to beat Millar from long range in the 71st minute and Thomson shot over the bar from 25 yards out two minutes later.
After pulling a goal back, Alloa desperately tried to find an equaliser, Fleming coming closest but succeeding only in shooting wide.
