Montrose 1 Stirling Albion 3
MONTROSE suffered their first league defeat of the season, passing up the opportunity to leapfrog top-of-the table Stirling Albion.
A win would have sent Montrose two points clear of their visitors at the summit of League 2, but two goals from Callum Morrison and one from Sean Dickson cancelled out Ryan Ferguson’s late strike.
Stirling looked the more likely side to score early on, Peter McDonald passing up a gilt-edged chance from just six yards out.
Montrose could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Jamie Redman’s overhead kick was headed over by Templeman.
The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute when Liam Caddis’s free kick into the box was met by CALLUMN MORRISON, whose shot deflected into Allan Fleming’s net.
Iain Campbell came close to equalising seven minutes later, whipping a free kick inches over the bar, while at the other end, Fleming did well to hold Ross Smith’s header on the goal line.
Templeman could have put Montrose back on level pegging in the 30th minute when his powerful downward header bounced up towards the top corner, but Albion keeper Cameron Binnie held the ball at the last second.
At the Montrose end, Fleming did well to deny William Robertson when he was sent clear in the box.
The final chance of the first half fell to Graham Webster, who controlled the ball well, but his low shot was held by Binnie.
Stirling Albion opened the second half in perfect fashion, doubling their advantage in the first minute when newly-introduced substitute SEAN DICKSON headed in at the back post from Ewan McNeil’s deep cross.
Montrose continued to search for a way back into the match and came close in the 66th minute. Binnie dropped Fotheringham’s corner, the ball ping-ponging around the box before dropping to Sean Dillon 20 yards out, but the centre back blasted high and wide.
Robertson could have put Stirling three goals ahead in the 74th minute, having a shot saved by Fleming then blasting the rebound across goal.
Kerr Hay passed up a golden opportunity in the79th minute when Ryan Ferguson carried the ball down the left and slipped it into the box. Hay was one-on-one with Binnie, but his weak shot was straight at the goalkeeper.
Montrose set up a dramatic finish when RYAN FERGUSON scored in the final minute of play, heading in from Ballantyne’s cross.
Desperately seeking an equaliser, Montrose won a corner three minutes into stoppage time. Montrose goalkeeper Allan Fleming joined the attack, but when the move broke down the ball was cleared to CALLUMN MORRISON who carried it unchallenged for 50 yards and tapped it into the empty net.
