Montrose 3 Clyde 2
MONTROSE returned to winning ways with victory against Clyde in a five-goal thriller at Links Park.
The visitors opened the scoring in the third minute when SMART OSADOLOR controlled Max Wright’s flick over the Montrose defence and fired shot into the bottom corner of Alan Fleming’s net.
Montrose were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute when Kevin Nicol handled the ball on the goal line to prevent Craig Johnston scoring from a header, although the centre back was only booked, not sent off.
IAIN CAMPBELL made no mistakes from the penalty spot, blasting the ball into the top corner of Blair Currie’s goal.
The home side doubled their advantage in the 20th minute, CHRIS TEMPLEMAN poking into the net after Campbell’s corner fell to him at the near post.
It took only six more minutes for Montrose to go two goals clear, Templeman flicking Andrew Steeves’ cross to GRAHAM WEBSTER, his shot going in off both posts.
Having been by far the better side in the first half, Montrose’s second half performance was much less confident, and Clyde’s second goal in the 74th minute led to a nervy closing quarter of an hour.
The goal came when Barry Cuddihy’s shot was well saved by Fleming, but DAVID GOODWILLIE was first to the rebound, poking the ball into the unguarded net.
Montrose could easily have been well ahead in the opening 10 minutes, Connor McLaren hitting a low shot straight at Currie in the first minute and Liam Callaghan mis-hitting a shot when teed up by Johnston a minute later.
The home side were also unlucky in the 4th minute when Sean Dillon’s magnificent 80-yard pass to Steeves allowed the wing back to cross, but neither Templeman nor Webster could apply the finish.
Montrose came close again in the 39th minute, having a corner cleared off the goal line, while at the other end, Iain Campbell saved the hosts when he cleared at the front post after Cuddihy had taken the ball around Fleming before shooting.
Campbell almost put the ball through his own net with a deflection in the 72nd minute, but Fleming did well to save.
The final chance of the match fell to Goodwillie, who blasted a free kick over the bar from 30 yards out.
