Stenhousemuir 0 Montrose 1
With the weather putting paid to Stirling’s game today, we took full advantage and leapfrogged The Binos into top spot in the league with a narrow but impressive victory.
The home side threatened first when Ferns strike flew just wide of Fleming's goal and the game quickly became end to end with both teams creating chances.
We broke the deadlock after 19 mins when Steeves picked out Templeman with a pin point cross, and the big mans knock down perfectly met the run of TERRY MASSON whose left footed strike found its way past Smith.
Stenny nearly responded immediately but McGuigan somehow managed to send a cross over the bar from 6 yards.
We came close to doubling our lead when yet another, dangerous Ballantyne cross found Masson at the edge of the box but his header flew narrowly over.
We successfully endured a period of home pressure when reduced to 10 men as Allan received lengthy treatment for a head injury.
The half time whistle came at a good time for us as Stenhousemuir finished the first half with a series of attacks, which Allan, Dillon and Campbell defended resolutely against.
We started the second half well, without really threatening Smiths goal, but Stenhousemuir reminded us of their threat, with Ferns shooting narrowly over from 20 yards.
Petrie shuffled his side and changed formation in response to the home side’s attacking formation, but also in search of that crucial second goal.
Both Redman and Allan saw headed attempts go wide of the Stenny goal and Masson unleashed a 30 yard drive which flew high and wide.
Following an impressive attack down the right hand side, the ball found its way to Callaghan, who drove into the box but somehow managed to send the ball wide from 9 yards.
Another immediate attack saw Johnston one on one with Smith but the keeper dived low to save the side footed effort.
In the dying moments and with top spot beckoning Fleming had to make a fantastic one handed save onto the cross bar from a 25 yard strike from Paton then McMenamin sent a 12 yard shot narrowly wide.
Well done today boys, a great battling defensive display that will have Mo fans eagerly screenshooting the league table tonight! We continue our travels next week away to Clyde.
