Montrose 3 Berwick Rangers 0

Montrose moved three points clear of Peterhead at the top of League 2 with a comfortable win over Berwick Rangers.

With the Balmoor Side and Stirling Albion both out of action due to frozen pitches, Montrose knew that avoiding defeat would send them clear of their closest rivals at the top of the table.

They delivered in demonstrative fashion, surging into a three-goal lead inside the first half hour.

GARY FRASER opened the scoring after just 79 seconds, controlling Jamie Redman’s knockdown from Cammy Ballantyne’s cross and slamming the ball past visiting goalkeeper Robby McCrorie.

Fraser almost turned creator in the 11th minute, squaring the ball to Terry Masson, but the midfielder’s shot was blocked.

Montrose’s second goal arrived in the 19th minute, Martyn Fotheringham’s shot blocked but CHRIS TEMPLEMAN firing the rebound low into the net.

Fraser was inches away from adding a third a minute later, failing to connect with Ballantyne’s cross by the slenderest of margins.

But FRASER  did score his second goal in the 28th minute, heading in from Iain Campbell’s corner.

The second half was a quieter affair, although Montrose did have the ball in the net in the 68th minute, only for Chris Templeman’s strike to be ruled out for offside.

Cammy Ballantyne almost added a fourth goal in bizarre fashion when he chased down McCrorie, forcing the goalkeeper into a scrambled clearance. The ball ricocheted off the Montrose fullback, flying up into the air and rebounding off the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

Gary Fraser passed up a final chance to complete his hat trick in the 83rd minute, dragging his back-heeled shot across goal and wide of the target.
