Montrose's incredible 2017 came to an end in disappointing fashion, with a heavy home defeat at the hands of title rivals Peterhead.

Montrose had the first chance of the match, Paul Watson volleying wide of the target from an Iain Campbell corner.

Rory McAllister gave an early warning of his threat when he had a shot deflected wide of the goal in the fourth minute. From the corner that followed, JASON BROWN headed in unchallenged at the back post.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 17th minute, JASON BROWN scoring his second when he turned the ball in at the far post from Alan Smith’s low cross.

Montrose were under pressure for most of the first half, Peterhead constantly testing the home side’s reshaped back four. Alan Fleming pulled off a great save to deny Jordan Brown in the 18th minute, and Smith blasted wide from inside the box. At the other end, Watson sent a half volley over the bar from the edge of the box.

Jordan Brown shot wide after turning on the edge of the box in the 32nd minute, while a McAllister goal was disallowed for offside seven minutes later.

Montrose gave themselves a glimmer of hope just before half time, SEÁN DILLON heading in at the near post from a Campbell corner.

But the second half started in disastrous fashion for the Gable Endies, ALLAN SMITH turning the ball in at the far post from Leitch’s low pass across goal less than a minute after the restart.

From that point onwards it was almost all one-way traffic. Smith had a shot well saved by Fleming in the 51st minute, but MASON ROBERTSON headed in from the corner that followed.

WILLIAM GIBSON, whose corners had proven so effective in establishing Peterhead’s lead, smashed in a free kick just before the hour mark, then Jamie Stevenson crashed a shot off Fleming’s crossbar three minutes later.

RORY McALLISTER scored Peterhead’s final goal in the 69th minute, expertly tracking Stevenson’s perfectly-weighted long pass and heading over Fleming.

Montrose scored a consolation strike in the 75th minute, substitute KERR HAY turning and sending a low shot into the bottom corner of Greg Fleming’s net.
