Montrose 1 Cowdenbeath 1

Montrose's first match of 2018 ended in a draw with bottom of the league Cowdenbeath.

Although the match was a scrappy affair with few clear chances, Montrose could have taken the lead in the first minute, Iain Campbell feeding the ball into Gary Fraser, whose shot was half saved by David McGurn, Scott Rumsby hoofing the ball off the goal line before it could spin into the net.

Paul Watson was almost guilty of gifting Cowdenbeath a goal in the fourth minute, losing the ball in his own half and allowing Cameron Muirhead to burst into the box, but the striker’s low shot was held by Allan Fleming.

Harvey Swann’s involvement almost paid dividends for Cowdenbeath, with a shot tipped over after a mazy run through the Montrose defence and a deep crossed narrowly missed by Muirhead.

Connor McLaren could have scored for Montrose in the first half, but blasted over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Cowdenbeath were the first side to threaten in the second half, Muirhead having a shot tipped wide by Fleming. The keeper was called into action again just after the hour, saving well from Bradley Smith’s half volley.

The deadlock was broken in the 68th minute when Iain Campbell free kick from wide on the left was headed in at the back post by GARY FRASER.

But the home side couldn’t maintain their lead, ROBERT BUCHANAN turning the ball into the net after Fleming had nudged Matthew McInally’s shot onto the post.
The final chance of real  note fell to Craig Johnston, his shot tipped wide by McGurn.
