Montrose 1 Stenhousemuir 0

Montrose extended their lead at the top of League 2 to six points with a hard-fought win over Stenhousemuir.

The match was a tight affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances throughout the 90 minutes.

Montrose struck the decisive blow 10 minutes from the end, Lewis Milne curling a free kick from wide on the left to the back post, where JAMIE REDMAN in position to head across visiting goalkeeper Chris Smith and in at the opposite post.

Both sides had created half chances early on, Harry Paton coming closest for Stenhousemuir and Terry Masson for Montrose.

Chris Templeman had a shot tipped wide in the 16th minute, while Martin Scott’s low shot was well saved by Alan Fleming in the 36th minute.

The final chance of the first half fell to Templeman, his shot deflected onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

Stenhousemuir were the better side at the start of the second half, Paton shooting wide and Scott forcing Fleming into a low save. Sean Dillon almost turned the ball into his own net when he mis-timed a clearance on the hour mark.

At the other end, Andrew Steeves had a shot parried by Smith, and Redman had a header from a Milne free kick slapped wide of the goal.
