Montrose 0 Arbroath 4

Montrose Football Club got their first season in 22 years not in the bottom tier of Scottish Football underway with a home match against neighbours Arbroath.

Unfortunately after the presentation of the Ladbrokes League Two flag in was downhill all the way for Stewart Petrie’s men as they went down to a heavy defeat against Dick Campbell’s heavily backed side.

After the defeat from Forfar Athletic in the Betfred Cup Montrose showed two changes too their line up with Liam Callaghan and on loan Hearts striker Euan Henderson replacing Graham Webster and Ross Campbell.

Both dropped to the bench where they were joined by on loan Aberdeen midfielder Chris Antoniazzi, Craig Johnston, Danny Cavanagh, Paul Watson and goalkeeper Jordan Millar.

It was Arbroath who got the first Angus derby of the season underway in front of 1374 spectators at Links Park Stadium.

Arbroath had the first chance of the game inside the first minute of the match but although Ryan Wallace found himself in space he shot wide of Fleming’s goal.

Four minutes later Bobby Linn won a corner kick for the visitors which he took himself but Ricky Little headed over the crossbar.

Montrose had their first real opportunity in the 17th minute when a cross from Steeves fell into the path of Jamie Redman at the edge of the box but he snatched at the opportunity and Jamieson saved.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when a long kick out from Jamieson was misjudged by the home defence and although Allan Fleming saved the first effort from RYAN WALLACE the striker netted the rebound.

Montrose went close to an equaliser on the half hour mark when Masson got on the end of a Steeves cross but headed wide of the near post.

The visitors went close to adding a second goal late in the first half when another ball over the top caught out the home defence but this time McKenna lobbed over the crossbar.

Five minutes into the second half a mistake from Campbell gave Arbroath a corner kick.

Linn’s corner eventually fell to Omar Kader but he shot over the Montrose crossbar.

Jamie Redman then played a great ball out wide to Terry Masson he cut inside his opponent before shooting wide of goal.

Montrose had strong claims for a penalty kick in the 57th minute Henderson was fouled close to the touchline and Campbell played a great free kick down the line to the on loan Hearts striker, he cut into the box and found Martin Rennie he was just about to pull the trigger when his shorts were pulled but amazingly referee Newlands saw nothing wrong and allowed play to continue.

On the hour mark Patrick Cregg picked up a yellow card for a solid challenge on Kader.

Arbroath then made a change with Finn Graham replacing David Gold.

Two minutes later Montrose switched Patrick Cregg with Graham Webster coming on in his place.

In the 65th minute Arbroath were awarded a penalty kick when Dillon caught substitute Graham from behind for a clear penalty kick. Before the kick could be taken Dillon was booked for the foul and Michael McKenna of the visitors for something he said to the referee. BOBBY LINN stepped up to score from the spot.

With 70 minutes on the clock Arbroath made a double switch with Kane Hester and Danny Denholm replacing Kader and McKenna.

Two minutes later Callaghan set up Graham Webster outside the area but the Montrose man blasted over the crossbar.

Montrose then made their final two changes with Craig Johnston and on loan Aberdeen youngster Chris Antoniazzi replacing Henderson and Callaghan.

In the 83rd minute Arbroath scored again. BOBBY LINN was allowed the freedom of the park to take aim and fire home from 25 yards out for his second goal of the afternoon.

Montrose were looking for a consolation goal and substitute Antoniazzi had an effort straight into the arms of keeper Jamieson.

Arbroath rubbed salt into the Montrose wounds in the third minute of stoppage time. Allan headed a pass back straight to Arbroath substitute KANE HESTER and he had all the time in the world to fire into the roof of the net.

Hard lessons learned by Montrose which they will recover from in what was their worse defeat for two seasons.
