Airdrieonians 0 Montrose 1

A first outing for our commemorative Champions red strip coincides with our first points at this level for 22 years, and they were thoroughly deserved.

We started the game brightly and when Redman headed down to Henderson the youngsters angled shot was well saved by Gallacher.

We had a series of Campbell corners, one of which was headed goalward by Watson and Henderson’s flick had to be cleared off the line.

Masson came close next when, after cutting inside from the right his left footed effort had to be pushed round the post.

It was half way through the first period before the home side created an opening when Carrick got free in the box but a great recovery tackle from Webster saved the day.

Soon after Captain Watson almost scored an own goal when he toe-poked a Wilkie cross but thankfully it clipped the outside of the post with Fleming rooted to the spot.

Iain Campbell almost fooled the keeper by pulling a 20 yard free kick towards the near post with everyone anticipating a far corner effort, but it narrowly missed the target.

We should have got the goal our play was deserving when a great run and cross by Henderson fell to Watson who carefully curled his effort around Gallacher but unfortunately around the post too.

We continued to ask questions of the The Diamonds at the start of the second half and scored what proved to be the winner.

Another Campbell corner beyond the far post was clipped back across goal by Dillon and Ross Campbell showed great poaching instincts to glance a header past Gallacher from close range.

It was again almost half way through the half before the home side threatened when good control from Conroy created space but his shot flew over Fleming’s bar.

The biggest talking point of the game came with 15 mins remaining. Henderson, who had been lively all afternoon, latched on to a through ball and outmuscled Crighton. Stretching to poke the ball passed the outrushing keeper, the two then collided with the large, vocal away support screaming for a penalty, but the ref did not agree and the ball was cleared before it crossed the line.

The incident did however lead to Gallacher being stretchered off (we wish him a speedy recovery) and his replacement Hutton was called into action soon after.

A great Rennie run set up Callaghan, whose drive from outside the box looked net bound until at full stretch Hutton pushed the ball wide. The resulting corner caused confusion in the box with the ball again having to be cleared off the line.

Airdrie rallied towards the end, making things a little nervy but when a dangerous McIntosh header ran harmlessly through to Fleming and Conroy fired a good shot from inside the box past the post, we knew we had done enough.

A great performance and a perfect reaction to last weeks result. We are on the road again on Wednesday as we head to Cove in the IRN-BRU Cup before the mouthwatering prospect of another Angus Derby as we welcome Brechin City to Links Park next Saturday.
