Dumbarton 2 Montrose 1

Same place, same time as last week and by half time it was looking like the same result as Montrose led 1-0. Then a 5-minute period of self-destruction changed the game and the result dramatically and instead of being in a play-off position Montrose hit bottom spot in League 1.

Manager Stewart Petrie made changes again from the cup game last week and Dumbarton also made changes with previously unavailable players back in the starting line-up.

Dumbarton started the brighter of the two sides and penned Montrose in their own half for most of the first quarter but without looking particularly dangerous whilst there was always the chance of a Montrose breakaway goal as happened the week before. The early exchanges were capably dealt with by Fleming in the Montrose goalmouth and by Sean Dillon expertly marshalling his back line.

Montrose’s best chance came on the 10 minute mark but an Iain Campbell free kick wide right was dealt with easily. Craig Johnston looked fit and lively up front and provided the foil to enable Euan Henderson to plough his way through the centre but hit his shot just wide. Moments later as Montrose weathered the early Dumbarton storm Johnston’s perseverance almost bore fruit as he chased down a long ball, beat the keeper Grant Adam to the ball and cut it back to Henderson whose shot to an empty net was deflected just enough to push it wide. Paddy Cregg had the yellow card flashed at him for a pullback but Jamie Redman was next to have a near miss when poking an effort over the bar when stretching at close range.

Dumbarton were then rocked by an injury to Stuart Carswell who was replaced by Kyle Hutton after 25 minutes but they still attacked with some venom as Ross Forbes wasted a free kick from 25 yards out. Then disaster again for Dumbarton as another injury hit them when striker Jack Aitchison had to be replaced by Rory Loy on 35 minutes. Then the first goal came when Andrew Steeves fed a low cross into the six-yard box and Craig Johnston stooped to glance his header just inside the far post to put Montrose 1-0 up not long before the half time whistle.

The second half started with Dumbarton on the front foot as they won 50/50 balls aided by some lacklustre Montrose play. But it was Montrose who carved out the first opening as Johnston bundled his way through only to be hauled back by Allardice who saw yellow for his troubles. Chances at both ends went begging as a Campbell free kick hit the wall when he usually does better and Fleming held a long range effort at the other end. Ross Forbes was next to see yellow for dissent after a Dumbarton player dived in recklessly.

Montrose then made a substitution after 65 minutes with Martin Rennie coming on for Henderson who had run out of steam.

Next came the five minutes of Montrose self-destruction. Firstly, a corner evaded everyone except for big Andrew Dowie who headed in at close range at the far post to make it 1-1. Poor defending of a routine corner. That was after 68 minutes. Two minutes later a needless penalty was conceded. True the Dumbarton player was backing in but if you push him in the box he will make the most of it and as expected the referee pointed straight to the spot. Ross Forbes made no mistake to make it 2-1. So, from 1-0 up to 2-1 down within two minutes and two avoidable goals. Within seconds of the restart Bolochoweckyj was given a red card for striking an opponent whilst the Dumbarton player saw yellow for striking back. Two goals conceded and down to ten men saw a complete turn around but it got worse for Montrose moments later as manager Petrie was ordered to the stands. All of this within the space of a few minutes.

Terry Masson was next to incur the wrath of referee Dickinson and saw yellow for a meaty challenge. From the bench Montrose then made two more substitutions with Cregg and Redman off and Callaghan and Antoniazzi on in the 78th minute.

The ten men of Montrose still pushed forward however and a Johnston lay off to Callaghan could have ended better than being fired over the bar. Steeves then hit a perfect cross and Rennie was unlucky to see his powerful header flash just wide. As the clock ticked down Dumbarton exploited their man advantage and had several chances to increase their lead whilst frustration caused Iain Campbell to see yellow as two Dumbarton players kept the ball at the corner flag. From the free kick Loy should have scored but he headed over the top when it looked easier to score.

A 2-1 defeat sees Montrose rooted to the bottom of League 1 and with a suspension and an injury to two key defenders the trip to Kirkaldy next week demands full concentration and discipline from Montrose.
