Montrose 3 Raith Rovers 2

Montrose moved into the promotion play-off spots with a win over full-time rivals Raith Rovers.

The visitors took the lead after just three minutes when Nathan Flanagan sent the ball across the Montrose box, DANIEL ARMSTRONG smashing the ball into the roof of Alan Fleming’s net.

But their lead lasted only seven minutes. Montrose won a free kick 25 yards out, MARTIN RENNIE stepping up to curl a shot over the defensive wall and into Robbie Thomson’s goal.

Raith could have restored their advantage almost immediately when Iain Campbell was caught out by a long ball, but Liam Buchanan could only shoot straight at Fleming.

Kevin Nisbet fired a free kick over Fleming’s crossbar in the 19th minute, and Buchanan blasted high and wide from the edge of the box five minutes later.
Martin Rennie was denied a second goal in the 38th minute when his shot after an Iain Campbell corner was held low by Thomson.

Terry Masson and Andrew Steeves both came close to scoring in the 40th minute, forcing Thomson into saves, and Steeves having a header cleared off the line.
Montrose captain Paul Watson was denied by the woodwork two minutes into the second half, his curling shot rebounding off the junction of the post and crossbar. Rennie knocked the rebound into the net, but was flagged offside.

Masson again came close to scoring in the 57th minute, collecting a crossfield pass from Iain Campbell but firing a half volley over the crossbar.
Montrose’s second goal finally came in the 59th minute. Iain Campbell’s free kick to the edge of the box was headed to the back post by Paul Watson, where CRAIG JOHNSTON poked the ball into the net.

Fleming was called into action again in the 69th minute, making a low save from a Buchanan shot. Kyle Benedictus headed over from the corner that followed.

Raith’s equaliser came in the in 74th minute, KEVIN NISBET controlling the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal, turning and firing a shot into the bottom corner of Fleming’s net.

But Montrose dug deep and powered ahead again four minutes later. Andrew Steeves released Euan Henderson down the left. His raw pace carried him to the edge of the box, and he slammed a square ball across goal. ROSS CAMPBELL slid in to take the ball over the goal line, sparking wild celebrations amongst his teammates and the home fans.

Raith tried to find a way back into the match, Nisbet sending a free kick high over Fleming’s crossbar in the 81st minute, and shooting over after a mazy run into the box a minute later.

Flanagan’s free kick was well saved by Fleming in the 88th minute, and the goalkeeper held a Euan Murray haeder in the following minute.

Raith’s final chance saw Nisbet blast over the crossbar from inside the box.
Martin Rennie attempted to recreate his spectacular free kick goal deep in injury time, but sent the ball wide of goal.
