Forfar Athletic 2 Montrose 1

Our unbeaten run comes to an end with a harsh lesson in taking chances in a game we could have had wrapped up before the break.

In atrocious conditions we started really well and a Henderson run set up Johnston but his cross evaded everyone.

We kept up the pressure and when Watson intercepted the ball in his own, he drove forward before slipping in Henderson inside the box who was brought down by Bain for a penalty.

Top scorer MARTIN RENNIE stepped up and blasted the spot kick past McCallum.

Campbell looked to double our advantage with a driven 30 yard free kick, but McCallum was right behind it.

Johnston, sharp as ever, robbed Bain and drove towards goal but curled his effort wide.

We were well on top and on the half hour, Henderson cut in from the left and fired a right foot effort that McCallum had to tip onto the bar at full stretch.

Ruing those missed chances, the home side suddenly found themselves back in the game when a determined run and shot from distance by DALE HILSON flew past the despairing dive of Fleming.

With half time looming, Watson played in Johnston who beat the offside trap but once again, faced only by the keeper he skewed his effort wide of target.

The home side rallied and started the second half strongly and when Harrington made a mistake inside the area Easton slashed the ball across the face of goal.

The striker came closer soon after when his shot was only parried by Fleming and Campbell had to clear off the line.

The game drifted for a spell before Easton found time and space in the box but Fleming pulled off a smart save.

We started to threaten again and a good move and cross from Johnston found Watson, whose drive was deflected wide.

Johnston then sliced a shot into the side netting and a Henderson shot from outside the area was an easy save for McCallum before a goalmouth scrabble ensued but Johnston was unable to poke the ball home.

With time running out the game was turned on its head when a slick passing move ended with DALE HILSON beating offside and firing past Fleming from inside the box.

We tried to salvage a point when a great run and cross by Steeves found Watson but his header was deflected wide and on the counter attack, Baird hit the outside of the post.

Great effort by the boys in the worst of conditions and next week we welcome Stenhousemuir in our pre-Xmas fixture, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!!!
