Stranraer 1 Montrose 2

A great away day performance on an energy sapping pitch to start 2019 with a well earned 3 points, despite a nervy finish.

The home side looked lively from the off and after a good run, Turner’s shot was saved well by the legs of Fleming.

In just the second minute Cummins fouled Johnston inside the area and the ref pointed straight to the spot. Having just been voted December’s Player of the Month, Rennie stepped up to fire the penalty in the bottom right corner, despite Currie guessing right and getting a touch.

Turner continued to be a threat and through on goal again, Dillon this time had to block his effort.

Rennie almost doubled his tally when he met a Campbell corner at the near post, but his header was soft and an easy catch for Currie.

Before a quarter of an hour was played Rennie did get his 11th of the season, when Cummins fouled Masson in the box and the striker fired the spot kick into the same corner as before with Currie this time diving the other way.

Hamill tried to strike back when he headed a Lamont corner but Fleming made a comfortable catch.

We were handling the game and pitch very well at this stage and it was almost 3 when Johnston drove forward on the counter attacked before slipping in the overlapping Steeves whose low drive drew a good save from Currie.

The roles were reversed minutes later when Steeves dinked a cross from the byline for Johnston, who chested before shooting into the side netting.

Just before the break Cameron found space and ran clear but blasted high and wide from the edge of the area.

Early in the second half we tried to kill the game but when Callaghan’s cross was laid off by Rennie, 16 yards from goal, Campbell’s shot was blocked.

Soon after, we broke well again and this time both Johnston’s shot and Campbell’s follow up effort were blocked.

The home side started to gain momentum and when a long ball was headed down by McManus and scuffed wide by Anderson the warning signs were there.

On the hour, we gifted the home side a way back when a back header by Dillon was short and Cameron nipped in to round Fleming and slot home.

We looked rattled for a spell and a defensive mix up allowed goal scorer Cameron to shoot from 10 yards but Fleming saved well low down.

With 15 to play, a dribbling run along the edge of the box and shot by Lamont looked net bound with Fleming rooted, but thankfully it went wide of the post.

The game became stretched as the home side started to push forward but we had a number of chances to bury the game.

Entering added time a mazy run down the wing and along the byline from Webster should have ended with a goal but the substitutes shot was well blocked by Currie and right at the death Antoniazzi broke away and fed Henderson who fought through a tackle but shot over.

A great and gutsy performance and we welcome East Fife next week, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!!
