The 568 fans who turned up at Links Park on Saturday were treated to an exciting game with play raging from end-to-end.

Montrose took the lead after just four minutes when Terry Mason controlled the ball well on the edge of the box and hammered the ball past Robbie Mutch in the Citizens’ goal.

The Gable Endies lost Kerr Waddell to a serious facial injury after 10 minutes with Mark Whatley coming on to replace him.

Minutes later Blair Lyons was unable to capitalise on a good chance when the ball broke to him in the box.

On 26 minutes, the visitors’ John Robertson made space for himself in the Montrose box but his shot cleared the bar.

Minutes later, Matty Allan headed over from a Craig Brown corner before Craig Johnston broke clear, but the danger was cleared.

The visitors levelled just before half-time when a shot from the left was turned into his own net by Matty Allan.

Worse was to follow for the Gable Endies when Aaron Lennox failed to hold a shot from the left-hand side of the box and John Robertson was on hand to head the visitors ahead in first-half injury time.

Terry Masson had picked up a leg knock and was replaced by Liam Callaghan who would have a profound effect on the game.

Just minutes after the restart Blair Lyons appeared to be brought down in the box but referee Dan McFarlane waved away penalty claims.

Shortly afterwards, Aaron Lennox had to look sharp to save at the feet of Ousman See.

Blair Lyons was giving the visitors’ defence a torrid time on the left and the result was a number of free kicks and Montrose got back on level terms on the hour mark from a Liam Callaghan free kick when Sean Dillon bulleted the ball past Mutch.

The Citizens took the lead again on 83 minutes when Innes Murray scored into an empty net after Lennox could only deflect the ball into his path.

The Gable Endies continued to look for an equaliser with Paul Watson heading narrowly past.

However the Dynamo got a deserved point with almost the last action of the match when Matty Allan scored with a header from another Callaghan free kick.

There was only enough time only for Mr McFarlane to flash a yellow card at a member of the Edinburgh coaching staff before he brought the game to a close. A tough game against a robust side but Montrose showed a lot of character and were well worthy of their point.
