Clyde 3 Montrose 2

The difference between the teams on the day was that Clyde had a top-class striker and but for David Goodwillie Montrose would have got something as they dominated for long periods of the game.

Referee Barry Cook got the game underway and early on there were a few ‘meaty’ tackles but nothing else of note until DAVID GOODWILLIE latched onto a short pass from Steeves to Lennox – Goodwillie does not miss those and made it 1-0 after 8 minutes.

From that point on Montrose dominated the rest of the first half and deservedly equalised on 17 minutes as a Harry Cochrane shot cannoned back from the post to the lurking RUSSELL McLEAN who hammered it home to make it 1-1

Little was seen of Clyde as an attacking force but Montrose failed to capitalise on their superiority despite several chances before half time and it stayed at 1-1. Young Harry Cochrane was more involved and looked every bit the player we all know he can be.

No changes for the start of the second half but the first chance again fell to Montrose. Cammy B careered forward as he does and hit a great ball right along the face of goal but despite an almighty scrambled the ball was eventually hacked away.

That was to signal a good spell of pressure by Clyde who were second best up to that point. There appeared to be little danger as they worked the ball down the left but a great cross saw DAVID GOODWILLIE head the ball firmly into the top corner to make it 2-1 after 59 minutes.

Cue Montrose substitutions, three of them on 66 minutes as Manager Petrie brought on the experience of Dillon, Watson and Johnston to replace McLean, Callaghan and Cochrane.

The game changed again as Montrose forced the pace after letting it slip. On 69 minutes the impressive CHRIS MOCHRIE made it 2-2 following a good move with a firm shot from 25 yards.

The Mo were back in it and sensed the win was possible. That man Goodwillie had other ideas however. His goal bound shot was blocked but the danger was there. Bain replaced Howie for Clyde whilst for Montrose Ross Campbell replaced Mochrie on 74 minutes. Two more Montrose chances went begging as a Cammy B shot was just over the top then a Milne shot was blocked but the ball broke kindly for Clyde. It swiftly found Cunningham wide left, he fed the onrushing DAVID GOODWILLIE and he made no mistake with a firm shot from 25 yards on the run to make it 3-2 on 79 minutes.

At that point it was against the run of play but Montrose still had 10 minutes to square the game. Both sides made further changes with McNiff on for Shiels and Rennie on for Webster. A corner was wasted by Montrose with a poor delivery as the game drifted away from them. The final few minutes were only notable for three yellow cards as Cunningham kicked the ball away to waste time then Yano Campbell saw yellow for dissent and finally Cammy F saw yellow as the referee blew for full time.
