Montrose Greats - David Larter
Thinking of something new to say about Dave's 432 appearances for Montrose is difficult. If there is a better example of loyalty and service to a provincial part-time club in recent times then it must be some record. In his testimonial programme I wrote...
"One can quote statistics as to games played, seasons with the club, goals (or in this case shut-outs!) to portray a players contribution to their football club.
In David's case however they only begin to play a part in creating the 'legend' that we pay tribute to tonight.
Twelve years with a part-time club in modern times is a feat in itself. To achieve this whilst living Edinburgh and working in various parts of Scotland on a weekly basis is probably unmatched. Dave's devotion to the 'Mo' over the last twelve years goes way beyond these observations.
His 100% playing for the jersey attitude combined with many outstanding displays earned him the respect of a generation of Gable Endies.
My own personal memories of such performances include some outstanding clean-sheets against Arbroath which helped establish our recent formidable record against them; and a magnificent display against Celtic in the Scottish Cup in Glasgow in 1992.
David has never to my knowledge missed a supporters' social or fund raising event further enhancung his standing as a supporter as well as a player.
David has had some success to reward his time at the club with promotion achieved twice in the 1990's. I know however that he regards the many friendships he has made and the esteem with which he is held within North Angus to be of much more importance to him in terms of achievements. Players of David's calibre and loyalty are rare in the modern part-time game."
