Ross County 3 Montrose 1
Our cup run may have come to an end, but we were by no means disgraced against an extremely good Championship side.
The home side had the lions share of possession and started on the front foot with a low driven cross by McManus being well held by Fleming.
Stewart was played in soon after but his shot was saved at the second attempt. McManus was next to try his luck, heading just over a Cowie cross.
It took us 20 mins to get near the Staggies goal when Johnston played a one-two with Masson but the striker was unable to collect the return inside the box.
The home side went in front moments later when a good move from the back ended with Stewart slotting low past Fleming from a narrow angle.
McManus tried to double the lead but blasted his 30 yard free kick well over the bar and when Stewart was given time and space in the box we feared the worst, but Fleming saved well.
Cowie fired in a cutback cross that Fleming had to parry over then Keillor-Dunn showed good skill to turn and shoot from the edge of the box that went just wide of the post.
The tricky midfield man was not to be denied and minutes from the break he drove into the box and despite Fleming blocking his first effort he fired the rebound past the keeper.
Thinking it was game over at this point, we changed the Ross County half time team talk right on the whistle when a Dillon long ball was flicked on by Redman and Johnston nipped in behind the defence to poke past Fox.
Sensing an upset, our hopes were dashed early in the second half when a miss placed pass from Campbell allowed a counter attack and Keillor-Dunn slotted past Fleming.
Lindsay’s drive from the edge of the box had to be pushed wide by Fleming for a corner and then Stewart’s header from 6 yards landed on the top of the net.
Stewart had the ball in the net but the linesman deemed him offside and a great Cowie cross was headed just wide by Lindsay at the far post.
Our opportunities to cross the half way line were limited against a side who have only lost once in the league this term, but when Fox came racing off his line to deny Rennie reaching a long through ball, the keepers clearance fell to Cavanagh, but his long range effort wasn’t strong enough to beat Fontaine, who had dropped in well to cover for the out of position Fox.
A superb effort from the boys against a class side and we wish them well in the next round. We now return to league business next week as we welcome Airdrieonians.
