Arbroath 2 Montrose 0
A scoreline that was a fair reflection of the first half, but eventually flattered the hosts after a valiant second half performance from the Mo.
Arbroath looked dangerous every time they attacked early on and Linn was first to try his luck when he met a good cross at the back post but Harrington blocked.
Thomson then crossed again for Linn and this time his header was parried clear by Millar
It took us 20 mins to get into the game when Henderson showed a good take and turn but his shot was blocked.
Millar was tested again when a neat back heel played in McKenna but his shot from 12 yards was well held low down.
Our best chance of the half came when Henderson won the ball in midfield and released Webster away down the wing but his first time cross was just too far for Henderson to make proper contact and from a tight angle he shot wide.
Linn broke down the left and played a good ball into the box and McKenna’s shot was deflected behind. From the corner Thomson headed over.
After half an hour, the deadlock was broken when Denholm received the ball on the edge off the box. Twisting and turning he then shot through Harrington‘s legs leaving Millar stranded as the ball nestled in the bottom far corner.
Just before the break Webster put a shot from distance over the bar.
We were much better second half and the home side became wasteful in possession but we struggled to create clear openings.
Henderson set up Callaghan whose 25 yard drive was straight at Jamieson.
Just after the hour the games pivotal moment arrived when Cregg played a sweet ball through for Rennie who appeared to be fowled in the box by O’Brien, but the referee decided that Rennie had dived, to the astonishment of the travelling support.
Steeves came closest to snatching a point when a cross ball fell to him at the back post but his shot was tipped round the post well by the keeper.
Adding insult to injury, the league leaders showed their steel by rounding off a poor second half with a goal at the death when Doris latched onto a loose ball to poke home from close range.
A hard one to take given the effort we put in after half time, but we move on to next week as we welcome Stranraer, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!!
