Montrose 1 Stranraer 1

A tough encounter that saw us denied all 3 points right at the death by a resilient Stranraer.

We started really brightly and a driven cross by Steeves hit Johnston and fell to Antoniazzi whose shot was blocked.

The visitors responded and when a dangerous cross evaded Dillon, Turner’s header was too soft and became an easy catch for Millar.

Johnston came close after a clip from Redman played him in but his shot from a tight angle flashed across goal and just past the post.

A great cross from Donnelly found Brownlie but he headed over.

A Rennie free kick hit the wall and from the rebound his second effort deflected off Johnston but went just wide.

A dangerous Donnelly shot was blocked by Millar and from the resulting corner, Cummins free header from close range was bulleted over.

The half ended with Antoniazzi cutting inside but his shot was deflected past for a corner.

Steeves had a great chance just after the break, when the ball broke his way and he thundered an effort across goal but Currie’s diving save pushed the ball wide.

Millar was called into action soon after when a free kick was flicked on by McManus but the keeper was alive to the danger and saved well.

Johnston then came close with a spectacular long range volley after being set up by Redman, but Currie managed to tip it over the bar and from the corner Bolochoweckyj headed over.

On the hour we broke the deadlock when a great in-swinging free kick from Antoniazzi was met by the head of Rennie and Currie this time was left with little chance.

We almost doubled our lead when a great Johnston cross found Masson but his diving header was straight at the keeper.

Cameron tried an acrobatic overhead kick from 12 yards but his effort flew over.

Watson and Masson exchanged passes before Watson let fly from 25 yards but it was too high.

The wind was taken from our sales right at the death when we failed to clear a corner and after a goalmouth scramble Hamill managed to force the ball home.

We pushed for a winner but when Rennie’s free kick took a wicked deflection and crashed off the bar, we knew it wasn’t to be.

A great effort today and next week we welcome Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup 3rd Round, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!!
