Montrose 1 Arbroath 1

Ten-man Montrose held league leaders Arbroath to a draw at Links Park.

Montrose had captain Paul Watson sent off for a two-footed challenge on Omar Kader in the 52nd minute.

But they defied the odds to take the lead in the 75th minute. Terry Masson’s shot from the edge of the box was blocked by visiting goalkeeper Darren Jamieson. MARTIN RENNIE was first to react, tapping the rebound into the net from a yard out.

Arbroath equalised almost immediately, Jason Thomson crossing from wide on the right for THOMAS O’BRIEN to head into Alan Fleming’s net at the back post.

The match was a free-flowing encounter, with both sides creating chances throughout. Arbroath’s Ryan Wallace was the first to test the opposing goalkeeper, having a low shot held by Fleming.

Bobby Linn also came close in bizarre circumstances, his cross from the left bobbling up in front of Fleming and finally being swiped clear by Sean Dillon.

Michael McKenna then blasted the ball high over the bar from the edge of the box.

Fleming was called into action again in the 21st minute when McKenna shot from right hand side of the box, forcing the keeper to make a diving save to tip the ball to safety.

Linn tried his luck again in the 30th minute, beating Ryan Harrington and carrying the ball into the box, but he curled his shot well wide of the post.

Montrose’s best chance of the first half came in the final minute when Masson headed the ball into the Arbroath six yard box, where Euan Henderson had a shot blocked before the ball was scrambled to safety.

The first chance of the second half fell to Montrose’s Chris Antoniazzi, who shot at Jamieson from the edge of the box, while at the other end, Linn shot wide of the goal from 25 yards.

Having had Watson sent off, Montrose were briefly on the back foot, Linn shooting at Fleming from wide on the left, and O’Brien blasting wide from a corner.

After the two goals in quick succession, the two sides largely cancelled each other out. The final chance of note fell to David Gold in the box in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.
