Montrose 2 Stenhousemuir 0
Montrose returned to winning ways with a home victory over League 1’s bottom side, Stenhousemuir.
After three consecutive league defeats, Montrose were looking to capitalise on home advantage, and started the match in positive fashion, Euan Henderson making a mazy run into the Stenhousemuir box and shooting past visiting goalkeeper Graeme Smith, only for Andy Munro to clear the ball off the line.
Stenhousemuir’s first chance fell to Conor McBrearty, but his scissor volley from Ruaridh Donaldson’s cross was well over the bar.
Ross Campbell should have done better in the 10th minute after collecting Andrew Steeves’ long ball, but his low shot was weak and straight at Smith.
Montrose took the lead two minutes later, with Steeves involved again. The left back made a powerful run down the wing, before playing the ball into the box. TERRY MASSON controlled the ball and sent a side-footed ball across Smith and into the bottom corner.
Montrose were briefly awarded a penalty in the 20th minute, but the referee’s decision was overruled by his linesman, who adjudged that Ross Campbell had been offside at the time of incident. Stenhousemuir took the free kick quickly, breaking up the pitch with a move that ultimately led to Mark McGuigan shooting over the bar from the edge of the box.
Iain Campbell came close to doubling Montrose’s lead in the 29th minute when Henderson touched a free kick from 20 yards out to the defender, whose low shot flew inches wide of the post.
Montrose goalkeeper Allan Fleming kept Montrose ahead with a great save in the 38th minute, acrobatically tipping a Conor Duthie free kick over the bar
Andy Munro again came to Stenhousemuir’s rescue in the 43rd minute, Chris Antoniazzi’s chipped shot beating Smith before the defender headed the ball off the line.
The final chance of the first half fell to Euan Henderson, who made a long run before having a shot held from 20 yards out.
Stenhousemuir were more attack-minded in the second half, Duthie having a shot held, and Fleming saving a Russell Dingwall cross in the box after Steeves lost possession.
Steeves came to Montrose’s rescue in the 76th minute, clearing Greg Hurst’s shot off the line.
With Stenhousemuir pushing for an equaliser, Montrose capitalised on the space at the back to put the result beyond doubt in the 90th minute. Substitute Lewis Milne chased down a loose backpass and robbed Smith. The ball bobbled loose to MARTIN RENNIE, who thumped the ball into the empty net from inside the box.
The final chance of the match fell to Ruaridh Donaldson, who shot across goal and out for a goal kick.
