Montrose 2 Aidrieonians 1
An egg’cellent Easter performance and deserved victory despite a nervy last few minutes.
The visitors started brightly when a Hackshaw free kick was headed over by Crighton. Soon after, following a corner, McIntosh improvised with an overhead kick but it was an easy save for Fleming.
We then came close twice when a good run and cross from Steeves found Masson whose thunderbolt hit Crighton and the ricochet returned to Steeves whose clever flick brushed the top of the net.
Hawkshaw was looking bright and from his cutback Edwards blasted over from the edge of the area.
At the other end we had a flurry of chances with the best being a Webster shot from 18 yards well saved by Hutton.
Great work by Antoniazzi wide left released Steeves, who in turn found Campbell and when he set up Masson the midfielders shot from 15 yards was high.
Campbell then had a great chance to break the deadlock when he fed Antoniazzi, whose delicate return chip found the striker in front of goal but he just couldn’t get enough power on his header.
Just when it looked like our first half efforts were to go unrewarded, Robertson fouled Masson in the box and Campbell stepped up to bury the ball to Hutton’s left despite the keeper getting a hand to it.
The visitors reacted and almost equalised immediately when trying to make amends, Robertson got to the byline and just as his cutback was about to be fired home, Watson made a great tackle to clear the danger.
We kept up the pressure after the break when Webster’s chipped cross found Masson but his header looped wide and then a neat step over from Antoniazzi created space but his shot was well blocked by Hutton’s feat.
A Milne 25 yard free kick struck the wall with Hutton punching the deflected ball behind and from the second phase of the corner Milne crossed for Campbell to half volley from close range but Hutton saved comfortably.
We gave ourselves breathing space when a great ball wide from Antoniazzi released Milne who cut back for Masson to deliver a precise, guided shot across Hutton into the far bottom corner.
McIntosh came close to halving the arrears when, with time and space inside the box he got his shot away but Steeves blocked well.
The ex-Montrose front man did eventually get his name on the scoresheet as we entered added time when a free kick was headed down to him by Crighton and he turned and fired home into the top corner from 10 yards despite Fleming getting a hand to it.
We saw out the last few minutes and when Robertson saw red for his second booking, bringing down Henderson on the edge of the box, Campbell crashed the free kick off the bar with the last kick of the game.
A crazy 2 weeks, swiftly adjusting our view of the table and reassessing our aspirations and next week we travel to Forfar for the last Angus Derby of the year, C’Mon the Mighty MO!!!!
