Montrose 0 Partick Thistle 2
Montrose's Challenge Cup run ended with a home defeat to Championship side Partick Thistle.
The visitors caught the Gable Endies cold in the first two minutes, James Penrice firing a low cross through the six yard box from the left. JOE CARDLE met the pass at the back post and fired his first time shot past Aaron Lennox in the Montrose goal.
Montrose managed to shake off the early setback, and took the game to their full-time opponents. Graham Webster came close to levelling the scores in the 15th minute, heading at goal from an Iain Campbell free kick, but the ball was held on the goal line by Thistle keeper Scott Fox.
Mouhamed Niang could have put the visitors two goals ahead in the 26th minute after cutting inside Sean Dillon, but he could only shoot straight at Lennox.
Cardle could have doubled his tally on the half hour mark when he collected Kenny Miller’s pass on the edge of the box, but he sent his shot over the crossbar.
A neat one-two between Graham Webster and Blair Lyons could have proved productive shortly afterwards, Webster finding space wide on the right, but his cross was intercepted by Fox before it could reach Josh Skelly in the box.
Skelly was denied again in the 42nd minute, controlling the ball well in the Thistle box, but crowded out by the visiting defenders before he could get his shot away.
The final chance of the first half fell to Cardle, whose low shot from 20 yards out was held by Lennox.
Partick doubled their advantage in the eighth minute of the second half, courtesy of KENNY MILLER. The former Scotland striker met Ryan Williamson’s cross from the right at the back post and nodded the ball across Lennox and into the net.
Williamson found space to cross again three minutes later, but Tommy Robson’s snatched shot flew over the crossbar.
Cardle came close to scoring again in the 60th minute, bursting into the box but dragging his shot across goal and out of play.
Partick’s Reece Cole was denied by the woodwork in the 64th minute when his 25-yard free kick crashed off the crossbar.
Lennox had the Montrose fans’ hearts in their mouths in the 65th minute when he fumbled Williamson’s cross on his goal line, but he held the ball at the second attempt.
Montrose substitute Martin Rennie ran out of space and time in the 80th minute when Fox smothered the ball at the striker’s feet.
The final chance of note fell to Matty Allan, the Montrose defender heading over from a Dillon pass.
