MONTROSE fell to a second consecutive defeat despite a spirited performance against high-flying Queen's Park.

The visitors took the lead in the 24th minute when, against the run of play, JOHN CARTER was sent clear of the home defence and slotted a low shot past Stuart McKenzie.
They doubled their advantage in the 36th minute when the unmarked PAUL WOODS headed home from Darren Miller's corner.

Montrose were given a lifeline in the 64th minute when Leighton McIntosh was tripped in the box by Bryan Wharton. GARRY WOOD stepped up to take the penalty, firing a low shot past William Muir.

Although they maintained their momentum for the remainder of the match, Montrose were unable to find an equaliser.

The home side had started brightly, testing the visiting defence regularly during the first half. Their best chance came in the 15th minute when Leighton McIntosh burst down the right and sent a square ball across goal. Garry Wood was in the box, but his shot was well blocked by Muir.

Montrose's skipper came close again on the half hour mark, but saw his header blocked on the goal line. Two minutes later, Bryan Deasley had a shot well held.

Two ahead, Queen's Park could have further extended their lead before half time,
McKenzie called into action to tip a cross from Ciaran McElroy over the crossbar. From the corner that followed, Woods again came close, but sent his header high and wide of the goal.
