Cowdenbeath 0 Montrose 1
A decent win in tricky conditions last night as Stewart Petrie’s men kept up their pre-season momentum.
The game started scrappily with several offsides as both teams came to terms with the bumpy pitch and gusting wind.
Ballantyne created the first clear-cut opportunity after 19 mins when he was upended 25 yards from goal following a surging run. However, Webster’s clipped free kick into the box came to nothing.
Webster and Ballantyne linked up minutes later, with the winger playing in the full-back, but his shot went wide of goal.
The home side were next to threaten, when the industrious Fraser Mullen delivered a great freekick into the area, but Renton just couldn't get on the end of it.
Having setup the visitors last chance, Webster took full charge on the half hour, with an excellent run and shot that Whyte did well to save.
The keeper had to stay alive as Captain Watson was next to try his luck, with Webster again the tee up man, but Whyte again came to the home side’s rescue.
In the eerily empty stadium, the cries from the Montrose contingent for a penalty, 10 mins from the break, pierced the silence. Another surging run and lovely ball by full-back Ballantyne to midfield Ballantyne inside the box appeared to see the loanee clearly fouled, but the referee didn’t agree.
Jolted by the let off, Gary Bollan’s men created a flurry of chances, with first Fleming having to tip a Renton shot, from the edge of the area, around the post, then Dillon having to make a decisive clearing header from a Mullen freekick before Fleming had to make another good save from Hamilton, who latched onto a short back pass from Watson.
Desperate to make a breakthrough before the interval, Watson brought out a good save from Whyte from a 20 yard set piece, but the stopper pulled off an even better reaction save moments later to deny young Fraser McLeod a debut headed goal following a Steeves corner.
The home side crafted the first chance of the second half when Hamilton attempted an overhead kick from 12 yards but Fleming was equal to it, making a great save, and on the hour he was called on again to stop a Renton close range effort.
Minutes later, and with the rain now very heavy, the visitors finally broke the deadlock and it was the full back/winger combo at it again, with Ballantyne feeding a lovely through ball to GRAHAM WEBSTER who ran into the box from the left before coolly slotting past the advancing Whyte.
A flurry of changes was made by both sides, and with 15 to play, Renton grazed the post following a corner, before Watson shot just wide at the other end.
The game then drifted to a conclusion with little further goalmouth action.
Montrose complete their pre-season programme on Saturday at home to Brechin City, a game that can be streamed live – see website for full details.
