Airdrieonians 0 Montrose 1

Just one change to the Montrose starting line-up as Chris Mochrie replaced Paul Watson who was on the bench. Otherwise Stewart Petrie settled for the same again as Montrose went for a second successive away win against tough opposition.

Referee Grant Irvine got things underway and it was Airdrie who showed the early promise though without any noticeable threat up front and that was to remain the case. They had the first four corners but failed to take advantage of any of them and it was fully 10 minutes before Montrose showed they were a threat as Cammy F was just short when stretching to shoot from a decent position.

A few minutes later it was Cammy B down the right but there were too many bodies in the way of the cross as it spun out for a corner. That in turn ended up with Cammy F again testing keeper Currie at close range but the latter acrobatically turned it for another corner.

Honours about even midway through the first half and it stayed that way as both sides pressured each other in possession. Cammy B again was a threat down the right, McKay for Airdrie shot just wide then a McLean header under pressure also flew just wide.

Webster and McLean combined well in the Airdrie box but the final pass was just too long and the chance went begging. Half-time and at 0-0 it was anybody’s game.

No changes for either side as the second half started but this time it was Montrose quick out of the blocks. Milne did well down the right but Airdrie somehow scrambled it away. McLean was a handful all day for Airdrie with neat work both on the ground and in the air but another header went just wide under pressure from Crighton but it was a corner to Montrose and a Waddell header was just too slight a touch and went wide as well.

Surely Montrose would have to make this spell of ascendency count – and they did just that on 51 minutes. A great move involving several players then a defence splitting ball from Cammy F put RUSSELL McLEAN one on one with keeper Currie and the big striker made no mistake to make it 1-0 to the Mo.

It almost became better for the Mo as Steeves and Webster combined on 53 minutes and Webby’s shot went agonisingly past the far post.

Airdrie were rattled but still posed a threat with some intricate midfield work but lacked the end product and a weak header was headed off the line with ease by Waddell. A triple change by Airdrie on 73 minutes saw Sabatini, Robert and Carrick replaced by Thomson, Connell and O’Reilly and it was the latter who immediately looked lively down the left.

Montrose responded by breaking up play themselves on 79 minutes as Cammy F and Lewis Milne were replaced by Liam Callaghan and Paul Watson who both looked to take over midfield from the departed Sabatini and Robert of Airdrie. So, another Airdrie change on 83 minutes as play barely got going again. MacDonald was replaced by Stokes then Montrose made another change as well on 88 minutes as McLean was replaced by Ross Campbell.

The clock was running down with so many changes but Airdrie desperately pushed men forward route one style which was food and drink to big Kerr Waddell and his pal Sean Dillon. As the very last throw of the dice went high and wide from 30 yards referee Irvine blew for full-time at still 1-0 to Montrose.

Another great team effort by the Mo and yet another good result ground out by a strong looking squad. Man of the Match today was Russell McLean who is a revelation at present but a special word for Kerr Waddell who again was immense at the back.
