Kelty Hearts 1 Montrose 1

For this pre-season warm up game and a first ever visit to Kelty’s New Central Park ground, Montrose made five changes from the team that started the other warm up game against Arbroath, such is the importance of getting pitch time for all the squad at this time. The starting line-up was Fleming, Ballantyne, Callaghan, Dillon, Waddell, Masson, Webster, Watson, Rennie, Whatley and Antoniazzi.

On a dry but cloudy day at least to start the game the referee was Mike Roncone who thankfully did not take cards of any colour out of his pocket.

Kelty started at pace and looked sharp as might be expected for a club used to winning almost every game. Too sharp in their first attack however as Austin whilst through on keeper Fleming, was flagged offside.

Shortly afterwards Kelty had a penalty appeal turned down as Montrose looked to settle into their own game plan. Austin hit a shot over the bar from a good position then Montrose had their first real attack but the final pass from Antoniazzi to Rennie was just a bit short and the chance was gone.

Kelty were dictating play in the first quarter of the game but poor finishing let them down. That continued to be the case as Austin wasted another headed chance but the lad was a bit of a handful whilst Webster at the other end had a rising shot saved by keeper Jamieson on 26 minutes. Rennie was next to see a 20-yarder whizz just wide as the first as the first half ended with the game still without a goal.

The rain had arrived for the second half as Blair Lyons came on for Montrose in place of Paul Watson and soon made his presence felt down the left as Webster switched to his preferred side on the right. On 50 minutes it was Kelty who opened the scoring. Austin got on the end of a through ball but his shot was blocked by Fleming only to fall straight in front of JOE CARDLE who hit it home to make it 1-0

Cue another change by Montrose as Masson came off with Craig Brown on then almost immediately the Mo were forced into another change as Waddell took a knock. On came youngster Aidan McKelvie who it should be said proceeded to slot in well alongside Dillon at centre back. Those changes of personnel also saw Mark Whatley drop deeper to a more holding midfield position where he looked really comfortable.

Kelty also made numerous changes in the second half but still looked a very solid capable and experienced side. On 72 minutes Rennie was replaced by Sam Garnham and shortly afterwards Antoniazzi and Webster were replaced by two more youngsters Jack Bowden and Keir Balfour for the last 15 minutes. Balfour in fact had a shot, or was it a cross, held at the last gasp by keeper Jamieson.

Into the last 10 minutes and Montrose replaced keeper Fleming with Keeper Lennox as it looked like the equaliser would evade them. Blair Lyons had other ideas however and a typical weaving run into the penalty area resulted in him being felled and a penalty it was on 85 minutes. Up stepped LIAM CALLAGHAN to hit it cleanly past Jamieson to level the scores. Just time for Kelty to waste two more corners before referee Roncone decided to blow for time with it still level at 1-1

Kelty looked a strong side and should do well in League 2. Montrose used the game differently looking at giving more pitch time to their players and several youth players who it should be said all slotted in well.
