Montrose 0 Dundee 2
TWO SECOND half goals saw Dundee record a victory and Montrose exit the Premier Sports Cup at the group stage.
The Premier League side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession during the first half, but were unable to breach the home side’s back line until the 70th minute, when Graham Webster conceded a penalty by pulling Jordan Marshall’s shirt in the box.
Former Scotland striker Jason CUMMINGS, introduced as a half time substitute, made no mistake from the spot, firing low to Alan Fleming’s right, the goalkeeper diving the wrong way.
The visitors doubled their lead two minutes later when Fleming parried Jordan McGhee’s shot, only for Luke McCOWAN to reach the rebound first and slam the ball into the net.
It was little more than Dundee deserved, the Dens Park side having dominated the first half, with former Liverpool and Scotland player Charlie Adam pulling the strings in midfield.
Dundee were the first side to carve out an opening, Liam Fontaine connecting with an Adam corner, but sending his diving header over the crossbar.
The Dee had a penalty shout turned down in the 15th minute when Alex Jakubiak went down in the box under pressure from Kerr Waddell, but referee Alan Newlands waved play on.
Adam was at the heart of almost everything Dundee created in the first half, firing a free kick at Fleming in the 24th minute, and curling a corner into the box three minutes later, only for Fontaine to crash his header against the crossbar.
Fleming was called into action again two minutes later, pulling off a point blank save from a Jakubiak shot from a deep Adam cross.
Fontaine headed wide again on the half hour mark, and McGhee fired a shot wide two minutes later.
The final few minutes of the first half saw Dundee’s Lee Ashcroft head at Fleming from a corner, and then the same player was denied by the crossbar in stoppage time, again from an Adam corner.
Having survived the first half unscathed, Montrose were subjected to more pressure immediately after the restart, Paul McMullan’s shot deflecting off Montrose’s Liam Callaghan and forcing Fleming into a diving save to tip the ball around the post.
McGhee headed over the bar from an Adam cross in the 53rd minute, and McMullan could only shoot wide in the 65th minute after a mazy dribble through the heart of the Montrose defence.
Finding themselves two goals down with 18 minutes to play, Montrose introduced Paul Watson and Chris Antoniazzi, having already brought Craig Johnston and Blair Lyons off the bench.
Terry Masson tried his luck with a shot on the turn at the edge of the box, but the ball flew high and wide of the goal.
At the other end of the park, McCowan fired a free kick straight at Fleming, and Cummings scuffed a shot into the goalkeeper’s arms.
The closest Montrose came to scoring was in the 84th minute when Dundee goalkeeper Adam Legzdins misjudged Fleming’s long clearance, allowing Lyons and Johnston to surge past him.
Lyons’ shot was heading in at the near post before Max Anderson booted it to safety.
The final chance of the match fell to Cummings, whose shot from the edge of the box bounced off the base of the post.
