Airdrieonians 0 Montrose 3

Montrose got their league season off to a flyer with a comfortable win at Airdrie in front of a good Mo travelling support.

To a man it was a dominant performance by Montrose who lined up with Fleming, Allan, Waddell, Dillon, Steeves, Webster, Masson, Whatley, Callaghan, Rennie and Milne with Quinn, Watson, Brown, Antoniazzi, Lyons and Lennox on the bench. Missing today were Ballantyne and Johnston but it was good to see the return to the squad of Aidan Quinn.

Referee Lloyd Wilson got it all started with the Mo in their black shirts and Airdrie set the early pace but Montrose held firm and after a few minutes started to dominate most of the rest of the game.

Steeves worked the ball down the left and although nothing came of the resultant corner it was a good early sign for Montrose and it was also not long before the first goal came. Rennie this time worked well down the left and TERRY MASSON found acres of space in the box to sweep in an unstoppable shot to make it 1-0 on 10 minutes.

Milne was also through on goal minutes later from a long ball but ruled offside much to the annoyance of the Mo fans who were in line and felt otherwise. Airdrie looked to threaten at the other end but what the back four of Allan, Waddell, Dillon and Steeves let through was capably dealt with by Fleming.

The score might easily have got better for Montrose as efforts by Webster and Milne twice went close or were deflected for corners. Airdrie however possibly were grateful for the half-time score of only 1-0

No changes for Montrose to start the second half but Airdrie brought on Gabby McGill for McDonald and a couple of minutes later were forced into a second change when Salim Kouider-Aissa went off injured and was replaced by Jordan Allan.

Montrose were still in command however and a great weaving run by LEWIS MILNE ended in the Airdrie net following his well hit shot from 20 yards across the keeper into the far corner to make it 2-0 on 50 minutes.

Waddell was harshly yellow carded for a tackle before Airdrie made a third change with Dylan Easton on for Scott McGill on 59 minutes. At this point Airdrie had a ‘sort of’ purple patch not that it overly troubled Allan Fleming who was always in the way of what they had to offer.

Montrose replaced Rennie with Lyons on 70 minutes to give Airdrie more problems to contend with and that is precisely what they did not do as the fast tricky Blair Lyons won a penalty when he weaved his way into a shooting position in the centre of the box only to brought crudely down.

GRAHAM WEBSTER coolly made it 3-0 from the spot on 74 minutes

and with a comfortable looking lead Montrose rested Waddell who again had a storming game and brought on Aidan Quinn for a welcome return to action.

Minutes later we saw the unusual sight of Andrew Steeves being substituted or shall we say rested as Paul Watson came on in midfield and the versatile Liam Callaghan dropped into the left back position. As the minutes ticked by Airdrie had a couple of corners which were both dealt with by Quinn’s arial ability whilst at the other end the last action almost brought a fourth goal when a well worked move by Webster and Milne saw Lyons put it inches wide.

In truth it was a comfortable win not that Airdrie played badly but more that Montrose played well with every man doing his job well on the day such that it was hard to single out a Man of the Match but Lewis Milne edges it anyway for his all-out attacking threat which is exactly what was needed.

Roll on next week to Clyde at Links Park when Manager Stewart Petrie might well have selection problems of the best kind if those absent today are back into contention.
