Montrose 2 Clyde 2

FIVE CHAOTIC and controversial minutes at the end of the match saw 10-men Clyde snatch a share of the points from Montrose’s first home league match of the season.

The Gable Endies had taken the lead in the 50th minute after Scott Rumsby pulled substitute Craig Johnston down in the Clyde box. GRAHAM WEBSTER stepped up to take the penalty, firing low to goalkeeper David Mitchell’s left.

They doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Lewis Milne passed a low corner to the unmarked ANDREW STEEVES in the box. The fullback sent a low shot into the corner of the net.

Montrose looked to be heading to the top of the cinch League 1 table as the match headed towards its conclusion. With two minutes of regulation time remaining, Terry Masson crashed a shot off the underside of Mitchell’s crossbar. Clyde launched a quick counter attack, which culminated in David Goodwillie crossing for ROBERT JONES to head in.

In the aftermath of that goal, Clyde’s Barry Cuddihy and Montrose goalkeeper Alan Fleming were engaged in a tussle in the net, resulting in each of them receiving a yellow card.

It was Cuddihy’s second booking, leading to Clyde being reduced to 10 men as Montrose restarted the match. The home side looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage, and pushed forward, the attack breaking down with what appeared to be a corner.

However, referee Steven Reid instead awarded a goal kick to Clyde, and the Bully Wee launched another quick counter attack.

Montrose appeared to have dealt with the threat and won a goal kick, but Reid this time awarded a corner to Clyde, much the home side’s chagrin.

Montrose then conceded a free kick on the edge of the box, which Aaron Splaine chipped in for ALLY LOVE to head in at the back post for a dramatic stoppage time equaliser.

The late drama prompted fury among the Montrose players and staff, with manager Stewart Petrie shown a yellow card for remonstrating with the assistant referee.

Montrose’s fury was understandable, as they had controlled the game for long periods in a match punctuated by frequent fouls from the visitors.

Webster had gone close to scoring early on when he latched onto a long ball from Sean Dillon, but his header was held by Mitchell.

Dillon also came close himself in the 12th minute, heading just wide from a Liam Callaghan cross.

Clyde created their first real chance of the match a minute later, but Goodwillie could only drag his shot wide of the post. Cuddihy also tried his luck, but his shot on the turn from the edge of the box flew high and wide.

Lewis Milne came close to putting Montrose ahead in the 17th minute when he jinked into the box, but he shot wide of the post.

Steeves had a shot blocked from a Matty Allan cross in the 35th minute, and Montrose ended the half with Callaghan curling a shot over the bar from 20 yards out after a short free kick from Lewis Milne.

Clyde started the second half with Morgaro Gomis shooting wide from the edge of the box, shortly before Montrose took the lead.

Blair Lyons could have added to the score sheet in the 51st minute, Johnston squaring the ball to him in the box, but his shot was blocked by Mitchell.

Both sides had chances in the wake of Montrose’s opener, Cuddihy scuffing a shot at Fleming, and Johnston having a shot blocked after flicking the ball over Splaine.

Milne’s shot from a free kick was held on the line by Mitchell on the hour mark, and a great passing move ended with Johnston having a shot blocked in the 67th minute after a Milne ball over the top of the defence.

Love showed how dangerous he could be in the 72nd minute when his overhead kick hit Fleming’s crossbar. He followed the rebound in, but was adjudged to have fouled Fleming as they competed for the loose ball.

In the lead up to the frantic final five minutes, Cuddihy’s low shot zipped through the box and out for a goal kick, and Goodwillie headed high and wide from a Cunningham cross.

With the match level late on, Johnston headed wide from a Milne free kick pumped into the box.
