Montrose 0 Alloa Athletic 2

TWO FIRST half goals gave Alloa victory over Montrose at Links Park.

Montrose had started well, Craig Johnston having a shot smothered by visiting goalkeeper David Hutton in the first minute.

The home side had two penalty shouts in the first five minutes, referee Alan Newlands turning down the first when Craig Brown was tripped in the box in the second minute, but awarding the second two minutes later when Blair Lyons rounded Hutton, only for the goalkeeper to catch him with an outstretched hand.

Lewis Milne stepped up to take the penalty in the absence of the injured Graham Webster, but he rolled a weak kick wide of the post.

Despite the disappointment, Montrose continued to look for openings, Johnston volleying wide of the post from a Milne free kick in the 18th minute, and Lyons having a shot held by Hutton five minutes later.

But it was Alloa who took the lead in the 26th minute when former Montrose loanee MOUHAMED NIANG robbed Mark Whatley on the edge of the D and rolled a shot past Allan Fleming into the bottom corner.

Montrose could have restored parity within five minutes, but Brown blasted the ball over the crossbar from Johnston’s knockback. Brown also came close in the 44th minute, but his shot from Milne’s corner was too close to Hutton, and the goalkeeper gathered it easily.

With half time looming, Alloa pulled two goals ahead, ADAM KING collecting a weak clearance on the edge of the Montrose box and slamming his shot into the top corner.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half were scrappy, with few clear chances created. Niang came closest to scoring with a low shot from the edge of the box that was held by Fleming.

Another former Montrose loan star, Euan Henderson, also tried his luck, but he shot straight at Fleming in the 73rd minute.

King came close to scoring in audacious fashion in the 81st minute when Fleming attempted to clear the ball 40 yards from his goal. The ball fell to King, who sent a first time effort back over the goalkeeper’s head from just inside the Montrose half, only for the ball to land on top of the goal net.

Alloa should have had a third goal in the 88th minute when they broke quickly after a Montrose attack collapsed. Steven Boyd raced forward with the ball, and had a shot well blocked by Fleming. The ball fell to Kevin Cawley, who took it around the goalkeeper, but Kerr Waddell was in the right place at the right time to boot the substitute’s shot off the goal line.

Montrose pushed forwards in numbers as they sought a way back into the match, with Paul Watson and Andrew Steeves both having shots saved in the final two minutes, but the home side were unable to add even a consolation strike.
