Peterhead 0 Montrose 0

Montrose lined up with Lennox, Cammy B, Steeves, Dillon, Quinn, Masson, Webster, Cammy F, Johnston, Milne and Antoniazzi having made three changes to their starting line-up for this game on a damp, murky day at Balmoor to take on a Peterhead side who always prove to be tough opponents. On the bench were Allan, Whatley, Brown, Keatings, Ross Campbell and Fleming. Referee was Alan Muir.

The action started fairly quietly as both teams sized each other up determined to give nothing away. It was 5 minutes before any great threat as McLean pulled a ball back from the by-line but Cammy B intercepted for a corner which came to nothing. Montrose had equal amounts of possession early on but it was Peterhead who had the better of it territorially, with Lennox dealing capably with anything which came his way.

Duffy was first to see a yellow card for a block tackle on 19 minutes but the Mo could not make anything of the free kick. They were now coming more into the game however with a corner from Milne hit long but cleared then a 25 yarder by Masson which flashed inches wide. Masson had another effort deflected for a corner from a Webster cross and still in the thick of the action Masson was yellow carded for a high foot. Webster was felled in full flight shortly afterwards but the free kick was short and wasted.
As half-time approached Mulligan of Peterhead was yellow carded for a bad tackle on Masson who did well not to retaliate as he was already on a yellow card. So, 0-0 at the break with honours about even.

No changes for either side to start the second half but with play swinging end to end Jason Brown became the third Peterhead player to be yellow carded on 50 minutes for preventing Craig Johnston from getting away to a through ball. Montrose were carving out chances now but still had to defend in a game which looked likely to be decided by a single strike which could go either way.

Peterhead tried from range but Lennox was alert then Webster for the Mo found Cammy F whose inviting cross along the 6-yard line found no takers. Antoniazzi also found room to have a pop but keeper Long was behind it all the way.

Peterhead made the first change on 62 minutes as Savoury replaced Lyle and as play re-started a great shot by Antoniazzi swung in from 25 yards brought a great one handed save from Long at the expense of a corner.

Webster was then yellow carded for a sliding tackle which referee felt was a bit unnecessary and from the free kick Ritchie got his head to it but it hit the bar and was scrambled for a wasted corner by Peterhead.

The first Montrose changes came on 72 minutes with Brown and Whatley on for Antoniazzi and Milne, the latter having a quiet game by his standards. Then a hammer blow for Montrose on 76 minutes as Dillon was straight red carded for an off the ball incident involving McLean but spotted by the linesman who alerted the referee.

Immediately Montrose brought Matty Allan on for Craig Johnston to plug the gap left by Dillon with 15 minutes still to play. Peterhead now upped the pressure against the 10 men of Montrose and replaced Duffy with Conroy but Montrose were not out of it by any means. Both Matty Allan with a header following a set piece and Mark Whatley with a shot could well have scored but so too could the Mo have conceded as the ball uncomfortably pinged around their 6-yard box before finally being cleared.

McLean did hit the net but was already flagged offside and whilst Peterhead exerted more pressure Aaron Lennox remained rock solid. Indeed Montrose had two corners of their own in stoppage time and could easily have secured all three points but a point apiece on the day was fair. Result 0-0

Man of the Match goes to Aaron Lennox who again was at his best to secure the point which took Montrose to third place in League 1 a point behind joint leaders Queen’s Park and Cove Rangers with the latter at Links Park next Saturday.
