Falkirk 1 Montrose 0

Montrose in their white shirts made changes to their very strong looking starting line-up which was Lennox, Cammy B, Steeves, Waddell, Quinn, Masson, Webster, Cammy F, Johnston, Milne and Lyons. When you look at those on the subs bench, Fleming, Dillon, Watson, Whatley, Brown, Antoniazzi and Allan you realise the strength in depth of this Mo squad also with Callaghan and Keatings still unavailable.

Referee Greg Aitken got it going and Montrose started very much on the front foot and won three corners in the first 3 minutes none of which came to anything before Falkirk thought they had better get into their stride. Their danger man all afternoon was Callumn Morrison down the right but Steeves did well to deny him any profit from his persistence.

Nesbitt had a chance for the Bairns but his effort was blocked at point blank range and to safety. Immediate danger averted Montrose hit back and won another corner which Quinn headed just wide under pressure. Then Webster hit a shot just too high as he held his head in his hands knowing it was a good chance. Steeves was next to create an opening on a charge down the left but his pull back went just behind Johnston. In the very next move Cammy F hit the let hand post and from the rebound Lyons hit the right-hand post but out it came again as the massed Falkirk fans behind that end all breathed a sigh of relief.

It was all Montrose at that point coming up to the 20-minute mark but Falkirk were very quick on the break down both flanks so defensively the Mo had to be alert. Lyons was equally quick for Montrose and when scythed down just outside the box the free kick was collected easily by keeper Martin.

Next was another spell of pressure by Falkirk but shots by Morrison, Telfer and Nesbitt were all off target or collected by Lennox. Two more Falkirk corners were wasted then the opening Montrose had earned came along on 37 minutes when CAMMY BALLANTYNE hooked it into the net from close range to make it 1-0 to Montrose. Both Blair Lyons and Craig Johnston did well in the build up the latter keeping it in play with a clever touch back to Cammy B. In the very next minute Masson was so close to adding to the scoreline when he sent it just wide under pressure.

On 40 minutes came a yellow card to Cammy F in what looked a somewhat harsh decision though certainly a free kick. Referee Aitken showed a yellow card to Terry Masson a couple of minutes later which looked to be even more debateable. Nevertheless The Mo held on comfortably for a 1-0 half-time lead.

No changes for the start of the second half which saw Lyons wriggle his way towards the box before he was blocked, but no free-kick. Morrison was still being a constant threat down the right but try as he would support from his efforts was lacking so Falkirk made a change on 57 minutes with attacker Keena coming on for McGuffie. Then another yellow card for Montrose as a Cammy B tackle on 20 yards was punished but Falkirk wasted the resulting free kick from a good position.

Falkirk had a spell of pressure at this midway point in the second half so Montrose made a change on 68 minutes with Watson on for Lyons to shore up midfield. Quinn then was hit in the face with a high challenge which was only penalised with a free-kick.

The clock was winding down as the Bairns became more desperate and made another change on 72 minutes as Williamson replaced Miller and Montrose responded by bringing off Webster and on came Whatley to add his experience to that midfield area. A couple of minutes later Antoniazzi replaced Johnston to stretch the Falkirk defence. Still Falkirk could not find the breakthrough they were desperate for as time passed.

Then on 83 minutes that opening came when Lennox stretched to save the day as Ruth homed in on goal but in palming the ball away he was adjudged to have fouled Ruth and a penalty was given. Danger man Morrison took the kick but Lennox clearly wound up by the decision given was not about to give up and saved the day as he pushed it out and to safety much to the groans from the home crowd at that end.

The 90 minute mark came and Falkirk made another change with Ross coming on for Telfer but all to no avail as Montrose comfortably dealt with the last few minutes of stoppage time by simply getting it away down to the other end until referee Aitken eventually blew for time with a 1-0 win for Montrose which takes them up to third place and only 3 points off the top as we head into the Scottish Cup next week away at Kelty Hearts.

Every Mo player did his job well on the day but the entire defensive unit were outstanding with Aidan Quinn rising in stature with every game alongside the dependable Kerr Waddell. A special mention to the travelling Mo support again who continue to be there in numbers and it is great to see the players warm to them because we are all part of ‘the team.’
