Montrose FC and Montrose Roselea JFC are teaming up, by way of an innovative and exciting strategic partnership, with its primary goal being the development of aspiring young footballers.

Both clubs have, for many years, provided enjoyment and entertainment to many and possess a place in the hearts of local folk, young and old, past, and present.

Committed to the development of local football, at all levels, Montrose and Roselea have a particular focus on the development of aspiring, talented football players and coaches.

Similar to that of all SPFL clubs, Montrose faces a challenge in supporting the development and transition of players from juvenile to adult football, and like many others in the Junior ranks, Roselea finds it difficult in attracting and retaining players against competing interests and obligations.

This strategic partnership seeks to assist both clubs in their efforts, on and off the pitch, with a particular emphasis on the development of home-grown playing and coaching talent.

Montrose FC Director Peter Davidson explains, “For some time, we have discussed and debated the best way to provide our most talented young players with the appropriate steppingstone from club academy football to the first team. The gap, with the first team now setting their sights each season on the upper end of League 1, has never been greater.

“So too however, is the standard of player progressing through our youth system. This development programme will support home grown players, but also those attracted from elsewhere, with the opportunity to train with the first team, weekly, and participate in a games programme, whilst also benefitting from adult football at Roselea, and the support of their highly experienced Manager Eric Watson and his backroom team.”

Roselea, who also play their home matches at Links Park Stadium, are this year returning to the Midlands League, following a spell playing in the north region.

New Roselea President Graham Douglas explained his thoughts on how the partnership will provide mutual benefit, saying, “Firstly, we are delighted to enter into this partnership with Montrose FC and are committed to playing our part in the development of aspiring professional footballers, by providing a valuable insight to, and the experience of a competitive adult football environment.

“In addition, though, we are grateful for the opportunity to complement our squad with the addition of talented young players, which will enhance our chances of being successful this season, but it will also safeguard the future of the club as we strive for a healthy balance of youthful and experienced players. With Merpro also returning as the town’s Amateur side, and running a second eleven, the opportunity will open up for Roselea players not playing regularly to improve these levels.”

The strategic partnership in action will become evident shortly, with discussions taking place between both clubs regarding loan transfers and more information will be shared in due course.
