The Gable Endies gave their chances of a playoff spot a welcome boost with a highly entertaining victory against Alloa.

Much like the previous home match against Kelly, Montrose were hoping to grab a goal in the opening minutes.

Kane Hester collected a Brown pass in the box and what seemed like a weak attempt did trouble PJ Morrison, who parried the shot out for a corner.

The first goal of the game came in the aftermath of the set piece. Aidan Quinn was able to find Blair Lyons on the edge of the box. The winger struck low to draw first blood.

Alloa were not looking to let down a large away support and continued to push for an equaliser.

In the 32nd minute the Wasps finally got past Cammy Gill. Montrose’s keeper did well to save a shot, however the ball made its way to Taylor Steven who hammered the ball into the open net for 1-1.

The first half ended in a back and forth frenzy. Alloa grabbed their second with a goal from Ethan Sutherland but conceded straight after.

Michael Gardyne sent a free kick into the box that was headed into the net by Sean Dillon, ensuring the sides were even during the half time interval.

Just six minutes after the second half began and Montrose got their third of the afternoon.

Craig Brown picked up a ball from Lyons before sending a low cross into the box towards Kane Hester. Montrose’s number nine composed himself, turning away from the defender and shooting past Morrison to give Montrose an early upper hand.

Montrose’s chances of winning increased not long after as Kevin Cawley received a red card for dissent.

Alloa did not let the disadvantage get to them and made it 3-3 just short of the 70th minute mark.

A corner found on-loan striker Bobby Wales whose first touch found its way into the goal.

Stewart Petrie allowed some young players to get a run out late on, with Ali Shrive, Harry Craig and debuting Alex Balfour taking to the field.

The roar from Links Park could be heard for miles in the 86th minute when Montrose grabbed a late winner.

A Gardyne free kick floated over a line of players before finding Graham Webster, who headed the ball past Morrison for Montrose’s fourth of the afternoon.

The win sees Montrose jump to third in the table, with another challenging tie against Cove Rangers looming.
