MONTROSE 1-1 ANNAN ATHLETIC

Montrose and Annan shared the spoils from an ill-tempered and high-tempo end-to-end clash, the home side grabbing a point with a dramatic late equaliser to keep their promotion playoff hopes alive.

The best chances of the opening 10 minutes came when Montrose struck the bar twice in the space of seconds, Blair Lyons smashing the ball past Greg Fleming in the Annan goal, then Kane Hester’s shot from the rebound clattering off the top of the bar and out for a bye kick.

Paul Watson tried his luck with a free kick from more than 30 yards out in the 13th minute, but the ball flew over the bar.

Benjamin Luissint had Annan’s first shot on goal in the 15th minute, but his weak strike was easily gathered by Cammy Gill. The Montrose goalkeeper also held a shot from Tommy Goss moments later.

Hester had a hooked shot deflected over the crossbar in the 18th minute.

Montrose struck the woodwork for a third time in the 24th minute, Paul Watson’s low shot from the edge of the box striking the outside of the post and rolling out for a goal kick.

The skipper was denied again two minutes later, Fleming plucking his header out of the air before it could drop into the net at the far post.

Michael Ndwieni had a header deflected wide in the 29th minute.

Watson came close with another header in the 34th minute, Fleming tipping the ball over the crossbar.

Annan took the lead against the run of play in the 38th minute when a corner was only cleared as far as Lewis HUNTER on the edge of the box. He had time to control the ball and lash a shot through the crowded box into the bottom corner of Gill’s net.

Kick off for the second half was delayed by a few minutes after a serious injury sustained by Montrose substitute Alex Balfour while warming up.

Gill denied Josh Galloway at point blank range in the 56th minute, spreading himself wide to block a shot with his chest.

Blair Lyons was denied twice in the space of a minute in the 66th minute, having one shot saved and a second deflected wide.

Montrose scored a dramatic equaliser when Ali SHRIVE nodded into the net from practically underneath the crossbar after Michael Gardyne crossed a free kick into the box.
