Montrose suffered a home defeat at the hands of fellow promotion hopefuls Hamilton Academical.

The home side had the better of the early match, Michael Gardyne trying his luck with a 25-yard free kick in the fourth minute, but the ball flew over Dean Lyness’ crossbar.

Blair Lyons came close to putting Montrose in front in the 18th minute, collecting a long ball on the edge of the box and taking it around Lyness, who was out of position, but his shot was blocked by a lunge from Reghan Tumilty.

Hamilton struggled to find an opening in the first quarter, Ahkeem Rose coming closest when he forced Gill into a low save at his near post in the 22nd minute.

But the visitors took the lead two minutes later when Jamie BARJONAS nodded into the net from a lobbed ball over the Montrose defence.

Montrose equalised almost immediately when LYONS collected Craig Batchelor’s pass and rolled it across Lyness and into the bottom corner of the net.

Rose was denied by a perfectly-timed sliding tackle in the box from Sean Dillon in the 36th minute.

Euan Henderson could have put Hamilton in frint in the 54th minute but curled his shot around the outside of Cammy Gill’s post.

Scott Martin tried his luck in the 60th minute, but his long-range shot flew well over the bar.

Hamilton retook the lead in the 75th minute when Montrose failed to clear a corner and Lee KILDAY volleyed in from practically underneath the crossbar, leaving substitute goalkeeper Ross Matthews helpless.

Reghan Tumilty blasted a shot high and wide in the 80th minute.

Montrose were denied a dramatic 95th minute equaliser when Lyness clawed a Machado header wide of the post at full stretch.
