Montrose FC have confirmed that midfielder Liam Callaghan has decided not to renew his contract this summer, bringing to an end an impressive 7½ year spell with the Club.

As Manager Stewart Petrie’s first signing, the 29 year old arrived at Links Park from Angus neighbours Arbroath in January 2017 and has since made 196 appearances and scored 6 goals for the Mighty Mo.

Stewart Petrie said, “Liam really has been excellent for us since he arrived and should be proud of everything he has achieved in his time here. Not many players will spend so long at one club and even more so, enjoy so much success, with repeated top 4 finishes and of course a League 2 winners medal in 2018.

“We chatted at length this week about his future, and it is Liam himself who has ultimately decided the time is right for a fresh challenge, a decision which of course we fully understand and respect. On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to thank Liam for all his efforts and commitment over the years and wish him all the very best for the future.

“Personally, I would add that he has been an absolute privilege to manage and a nicer guy and teammate you will have to go a long way to find and he is someone I have the upmost respect for.”

On his decision to leave, Liam added, “I would like to start by thanking everyone behind the scenes at Montrose FC, from all the Board to Ron, Robert, and Neil our kitmen. Everyone has been brilliant to me since the day I signed. It’s been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my career so far and I will miss everyone involved on and off the park.

“I’d like to thank all the coaching staff, especially the Gaffer, Ross, and Yano. They have always shown belief in me and helped me get through a difficult period of my life, for which I will be forever grateful.

“To all the fans and Supporters Club, you have been great with me, and I will miss the Dynamo on a Saturday. Finally, my teammates, it’s been some journey over the past 7 years with amazing highs of winning the league and reaching play-offs year after year. It’s been an absolute pleasure to play with them and a privilege to now call many of you close friends. I will miss everyone involved and connected with the Club, but I would just like to say a massive Thank You to you all.”
