Montrose FC Manager Stewart Petrie has put pen to paper on a 2-year contract extension, keeping him at Links Park until at least the summer of 2027.

With the first-time manager continuing to deliver sustained success for the Angus side, it should come as no surprise that the Club were eager to secure, for as long as possible, the man who has orchestrated an incredible turnaround in fortunes.

Arriving in Dec 2016, Petrie’s new outfit were propping up League 2, but within 18 months he had them finishing top of the table, lifting only their second league title and propelling them into League 1.

Despite being favourites for an immediate return to the bottom tier, Petrie had other ideas, incredibly finishing 4th in 2019, taking the club to its first ever Championship Play-Off Semi Final.

With a number of high-profile, full-time sides making the level of competition in the division increasingly harder season after season, it is nothing short of remarkable that Gable Endie fans today can look back over 5 such top 4 finishes in the last 6 seasons in League 1, arguably marking the most successful period in the Club’s 145 year history.

Club Chairman John Crawford said, “We are obviously delighted that Stewart has once again agreed to extend his contract. As the second longest serving manager across all 42 professional clubs, his credentials and reputation continue to grow year on year, so we are extremely pleased to see him put pen to paper once more.”

Chief Exec Peter Stuart added, “I am sure our fans will be as pleased as we are to hear this news. It is incredible to look back at what Stewart and his management team have masterminded over the last eight years, and we can all now focus on continuing not only the adventure and success on the park, but also the positivity and togetherness around both the Club and town.”

Stewart commented, “This was a really easy decision for me. I have enjoyed every minute since I arrived and have had fabulous backing from the Board, staff, players, and fans.

“The levels of consistency delivered by my coaching staff and players during my tenure has been incredible and I will forever be indebted to them, but we are not finished and collectively, our ambition and commitment remains to push for even more success and who knows even another promotion – so hopefully many more exciting times ahead!”
