Montrose FC was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Club Legend Brian Third in his hometown of Fraserburgh. Many will fondly remember Brian for his goal scoring acumen, but as a youngster he began life as a full-back at Deveronvale, Elgin and Peterhead.

However, whilst at Peterhead, Brian stood in as an emergency striker, with phenomenal results, scoring seven goals in his first two games up front. Suffice to say, he never looked back and in 1971 Alec Stuart paid a club record £2,000 to bring the then 25-year-old to Links Park.

Brian enjoyed 3 successful seasons with the Gable Endies, netting an impressive 52 goals in 92 games, with the Mighty Mo faithful lapping up the striker’s combination of exceptional pace and powerful shooting ability.

But no one could have imagined the record that would be set on the 23rd September 1972, when Brian scored an incredible 6 goals in one game, away at Stranraer, a lower league record that still stands today. Naturally, Brian was presented with the match ball, something he cherished closely over the years and was extremely proud of.

In his final season at Links Park, Brian set a Club record of 33 goals for a single season, which unsurprisingly attracted the attentions of many bigger sides and in the summer of 1973, he moved to St Mirren for £10,000. In 2014, Brian was inducted into the Club’s Hall of Fame and will forever be remembered as a very special person who played a very special part in the history of Montrose FC.
