STENHOUSEMUIR 2-2 MONTROSE

Montrose got a well-deserved point away at Stenhousemuir who are comfortably in the top four in League 1. The starting eleven was changed with Quinn, Williamson, Masson and Bertie in. Good to see Quinn back as well and Waddell who was on the bench but did come on later.

Montrose attacked first but the ball ran out for a goal kick then another attack gave the Mo a corner which was cleared. Stenny were next upfield but Steeves was on the end of it and got it away up to Lyons whose shot from 18 yards flew over the top.

It was Stenny who took the lead in their next attack from a corner which ended in a scramble at the near post and the own goal was given to Steeves as it appeared to strike him on the line. So, 1-0 after 15 minutes.

Montrose however were very much in the game but Stenny looked dangerous from set pieces. Sandilands shot wide then another corner to Montrose which was cleared but only to Bertie who was fouled just outside the box on 20 yards central but the shot was blocked.

Williamson was next to have a pop from 25 yards and keeper Jamieson pushed it away for another corner which came to nothing. The Mo were moving well at midway through the first half though a goal down from a set piece. Yet another corner for Montrose found Quinn at the far post but keeper Jamieson was there to collect. Three more corners followed up to the 30-minute mark, the first two for Stenny whose first one was headed wide and the second one was also close but hacked away. The third was to Montrose but hit short and intercepted as Stenny sped upfield but fortunately keeper Sharp was first to it.

On 40 minutes both teams suffered injuries in a clash of heads and for the Mo Loudon had to be subbed by Tommy North and for Stenny Anderson replaced Grant.

Final action of the half saw Lyons hit in the face but no free kick was given then Bertie hit a shot over the top.

The second half saw Montrose trying hard to save the game with two corners and on one a handball was appealed but the referee gave nothing and the linesman saw nothing.

Montrose were playing well in midfield and had energy up top and that paid off on 52 minutes when Callum Sandilands made it 1-1 when a clever lay off from Sutherland set him up to fire home from 15 yards.

That didn’t last long however as Stenny made it 2-1 on 56 minutes as a cross from the left to the right was hit back into the 6-yard area where Finlay Gray fired it home. Stenny made another change on 61 minutes as Ritchie-Hosler replaced Meechan.

Sandilands shot just over the top then Tommy North was yellow carded. The Mo made a double change on 69 minutes with Waddell replacing Quinn and Brown replacing Stevenson.

Into the last quarter of the game as Sutherland attempted to pass sideways to Sandilands but under hit it and it was cleared. Steeves was then relaced by Webster as Montrose were trying hard to get back into the game and playing well.

Then it happened as the Mo were awarded a penalty as Lyons was fouled. Up stepped Sutherland and though his kick was hit hard it was saved by keeper Jamieson but both Sutherland and Sandilands were onto the rebound and it was Callum Sandilands who got there first and scored to make it 2-2 on 83 minutes.

The last few minutes saw a yellow to Cameron of Stenny for a bad foul on Webster. Stenny almost scored in stoppage time but keeper Sharp was there to make a great save and the final bit of action saw both teams having shots charged down with the Mo having the very last chance.

A draw was probably a fair result but for Montrose a win was not out of the question with a good performance against a top four side. Must continue next game with the same momentum.
