Next up in our series of reflective interviews, celebrating the 145^th Anniversary of our beloved Club, we spoke with Charlotte Gammie about our back-to-back Championship winning season of 2022/23, propelling us into the topflight of the women’s game in Scotland.

Qu 1 – What are your abiding memories of the day you won the title?

When the final whistle blew at East Fife’s Bayview, I knew then that what I had set out to do when I joined Montrose FC had been achieved. We had secured promotion to the top tier of Scottish women’s football but more than that it was also my 100th appearance for the club, so it was a day I will never forget.

When we finally lifted the trophy at links park, now that was something else! Holding the Champions trophy aloft to a large Montrose crowd was a dream come true, something I’d imagined as a little girl but never thought I would actually get to do it. I still look back on that day with the happiest of memories that I can share with all the young girls that play for Montrose youth, dreams do come true!

Qu 2 – At the start of that season, how did you assess the squad around you and how well did you think it would do?

My honest answer? I believed in the squad 100%. We were one cohesive unit that year, something no other club had. After our incredible promotion in the 2021/22 season as invincibles, a historic achievement for the club, we headed into SWPL 2 full of confidence. We had not only that, but Craig had brought in a couple of experienced signings that would strengthen us in key areas. From management to the players, I knew we had the right mix of talent, camaraderie and leadership to push for back-to-back promotions.

Qu 3 – What were the key moments/games in that campaign for you?

There are few standout moments for me. At the start of the season, I set myself personal goals, and I truly believe it was the best season of my career. In March 2023, I scored a decisive goal against Boroughmuir Thistle, which went on to win Goal of the Season. That goal meant so much to me on a personal level. Then, in April 2023, I was honoured with SWPL2 Player of the Month, but the one stand out moment above the rest was looking up at the stands and seeing how proud my family were when we lifted the SWPL2 Champions trophy.

Qu 4 – At what stage in the season did you start to think, we could win this?

I’d say one of the key moments was when we beat Queen’s Park away. We knew how important that game was, especially with Gartcairn dropping points—it gave us the chance to go 10 points clear. Throughout the season, I felt like we were improving with every game, and that win really reinforced my belief that we had the potential to achieve something special

Qu 5 – What are you most proud of from that season?

On a personal level, I’d say I achieved everything I set out to and more. But it wasn’t just about me—it was about the club, the players, and the staff all coming together to achieve something truly special. We were written off at the start of the season as underdogs, but we proved everyone wrong yet again. What I’m most proud of is playing my part in putting my hometown woman’s football club on the map as one of the top 12 teams in the country.

Qu 6 – How does it make you feel to know you were part of a successful period in the history of Montrose FC?

I was proud every week to pull on the Montrose jersey but winning back-to-back promotions and helping take the club up to SWPL1 is something I will never forget. It’s surreal to think about where the club was when I first signed compared to where it is now. I feel nothing but pride when I talk about Montrose Football Club. It’s been an honour to be part of such a great club with the most amazing fans, and I’ll be a supporter for life.
